(Photo: Express Archives)Rajesh Khanna was a superstar in the 1960s and 1970s and it is said that he had a huge female fan following. So when Anita Advani, his alleged girlfriend at the time of his death, first met him, she was completely in awe. At the time, Anita was just 13 years old and Rajesh was in his 30s. In an earlier interview, Anita recalled the time when Rajesh called her to his set, started spending time with her and she fell in love with him.Anita, in a 2013 chat with Rediff, said that she was still in school in Jaipur when she met him during a trip to Mumbai. Since someone from her family knew him, they arranged for the family to visit the set but the meeting happened at his house. “He asked me for my number, and said we will keep in touch,” she said. A few days later, he called her to visit him on his set and Anita went by. “When I went on the sets, he was shooting a song with Mumtaz. It was a rain song. I was asked to wait in his make-up room. I had come for a few minutes to see the shoot, but mostly I was waiting in his make-up room. I was too young and didn’t understand why he asked me to wait there. He came to the make-room and he was there with me for quite some time. That’s how we started meeting. He wasn’t married then,” she said.Anita said that she took a year off from school after her ninth standard and was living in Mumbai for six months during that year. It was during this time that she fell in love with him. “I fell in love with him. He gave me so much attention. The way he spoke to me, I was totally blown over,” she said. But, things changed after she moved back to Jaipur. They parted ways and without delving much into the reasons that led to the break up, Anita said, “When I returned to Jaipur, I couldn’t get over him. But I never called him. There was no fight but I was very upset with something that had happened. We just parted. He never kept in touch with me after I left,” she said.ALSO READ | ‘Outsider’ Danny Denzongpa ‘was teased like a puppy’ till Jaya Bachchan suggested a solution, eventually found his place in movies as a ‘generic Indian’Anita said that she went through depression but “was too young to understand that it was depression. I became very quiet and aloof.” “I never got married. I was in love with him but I never wrote letters to him or called him. I went through a very bad time,” she said.Ten years later, they met again and by this time, Rajesh’s marriage with Dimple had fallen apart. Dimple was 16 when she married 32-year-old Rajesh. Anita moved to Mumbai at 23 and upon meeting, she “had a big fight with him.” She insisted that she was still in love with him and could not convince herself to love anyone else. “Rajesh Khanna told me he was fond of me and that he will always be there for me. We spoke out our differences but we parted ways. He told me to keep in touch with him but I did not want to get back with him because there was nothing in common between us,” she said.Anita tried out a few careers – actor, designer – but continued to be romantically unattached. “Being single was very difficult,” she said and it was then that she met Rajesh once again socially. “He would keep asking me to call him but I never did. I was scared of breaking my heart again. At one party, he put his arm around my waist and asked why I didn’t call him. He spoke to my sister and asked her to convince me. He always seemed like he was very fond of me,” she said.Story continues below this adShe said that it was around 2000 that she started seeing him regularly and apparently moved in with him in 2006.
