In Pakistan, FM has been established since 2016 and provides key insights into the overall migration trends of Afghan nationals returning to Afghanistan. It provides a detailed overview of Afghan returns, including their profiles, mobility patterns, routes taken, vulnerabilities, as well as key demographics and social characteristics. The exercise also helps identifying gaps and priorities in the provision of assistance along migration routes and at destinations. In 2024, the number of Afghan returnees from Pakistan to Afghanistan decreased by 243,112 individuals, from 558,212 returnees in 2023 to 315,100 returnees in 2024. This represents a 44 per cent decrease in Afghan returnees compared to 2023. Although overall return numbers declined compared to last year, return movements throughout the year were significantly influenced by developments in the “Illegal Foreigners’ Repatriation Plan (IFRP)”.Of the total returns in 2024, 97 per cent were self-organized and three per cent were deportations. Additionally, 76 per cent of respondents to DTM’s Flow Monitoring Registry (FMR) survey noted that they returned due to fear of arrest.
