Prime accused in Panagarh accident death case arrested from Asansol

The prime accused in the case of an alleged high-speed car chase in Paschim Bardhaman district’s Panagarh, which led to the death of a 27-year-old woman, has been arrested. Bablu Yadav, the alleged owner of the white car that “chased” the victim’s car was arrested four days after the woman’s death. Yadav was allegedly driving the vehicle at the time of the incident.Sunil Kumar Chaudhury, Commissioner of Police, Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, confirmed the arrest. An officer said, “He was arrested from Nigha in Asansol. The investigators took Bablu to the Kanksa police station in West Burdwan.” According to police sources, Yadav will be produced before a Durgapur court.On Tuesday, the police had raided his residence and questioned his family members after they did not find him there.Chandannagar resident Sutandra Chattopadhyay (27), head of an event management company, died and four other passengers were injured in Panagarh last Sunday night. Her colleagues had alleged that inebriated men verbally abused Chattopadhyay, chased and hit her car, causing it to overturn. However, the police claimed that the CCTV footage showed that Chattopadhyay’s car had chased the white car. The police had also denied the “eve-teasing angle” and claimed it was a fallout of one car chasing another.Suchandra’s mother Tanushree Chattopadhyay said, “There were many others in the white car. Why have they not been arrested yet? The police must arrest all.” She said she went to the Kanksa police station last Monday to ask the same question.According to police sources, Yadav has a business of car parts. Residents said he is a native of Uttar Pradesh and that his house is at the end of a small road off Panagarh’s Ricemill Road, where the accident happened.In February 2024, Yadav was arrested by the Budbud police on the charge of buying a stolen car’s equipment.
