The drama in the Boston Red Sox started one fine Monday. Last week, Rafael Devers sat in front of reporters and made one thing clear: He wasn’t giving up his position at third base. Not for anyone. Not even with Alex Bregman, the 2024 AL Gold Glove winner, now in the clubhouse. The message couldn’t have been clearer. What followed was a media frenzy. Speculations simply ran wild. Was there tension between the players with Bregman’s incoming – especially given some in the clubhouse sided with Devers’s stance? Or is something not right with the Red Sox and Devers? Now, a week later, Devers is in front of the microphone again. He sat at the JetBlue Park locker and didn’t look like a man much in any conflict. He was not tense, and if anything, he was simply amused about how big the story had blown than it was.A week after digging in his heels, Rafael Devers opened up at his locker Tuesday:“I really don’t know why this is becoming such a big story. We’re a team. We communicate with each other.“The most important thing is that we win. That’s where I stand.”https://t.co/lsBuEnGggA— Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) February 25, 2025Calmly, Devers mentioned, “I feel like I said everything I needed to say that day. I really don’t know why this is becoming such a big story. We’re a team, and we communicate with each other.”For Rafael Devers, there is no drama. It’s simple; he loves baseball and wants to play in the position he has played his entire career and win. His stance on 3B is firm, and he won’t budge. Now Dever’s performance has dipped in last season, no doubt. But his morale? Not so much.“I’m not frustrated. I don’t have the need to be frustrated about anything with anybody. My family is good. My kids are good. I have no reason to be frustrated about anything,” exclaimed Rafael Devers. Apparently, he doesn’t listen to all the noise because at the end of the all that really matters is baseball. Now coming to his dynamics with Alex Cora, there is seriously no bad blood.“We’re a team. Alex is my manager. He’s someone I respect a lot. He’s not an enemy of mine,” said Rafael Devers. But is Rafael Devers ready for 3B?Right now, the elephant in the room is—Is Rafael Devers even prepped enough after his rehab?Well, in the team right now, Bregman is working on both second and third positions, and the Boston Red Sox still haven’t locked in their infield configuration. A lot of it just depends on whether a young player like Vaugh Grissom or Kristian Campbell can step up at second base. If they can, then Bregman can take third, and Devers might be asked to DH.Oct 11, 2021; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers (11) celebrates with first base coach Ramon Vazquez (84) after hitting a three-run home run against the Tampa Bay Rays during the third inning during the third inning during game four of the 2021 ALDS at Fenway Park. He is busy with Jose Flores and even taking in tips from Alex Bregman himself! And as for Alex Cora, he is not rushing into any decision. “We’re preparing Raffy to play third base. That’s part of the progression. He’ll DH here and there.” Cora also added, “I think people are making decisions already and we haven’t made decisions. But we’ll keep talking to him and we’ll keep talking to Alex (Bregman). There’s a lot of things going on at second base right now. We’ve gotta find a way to get them all in.” The team sure is super supportive of Devers wanting to win, play, and have fun.But nothing is stopping the baseball world from debating his future, but Devers is clear, “I know the kind of player I am. I know what I can do on both the offensive side of the ball and also on defense. I don’t know why it’s such a big deal. I know what I can do. I’m confident in what I can do. I don’t need to be enemies with anybody.” Think Devers can do justice to the role over Alex Bregman?
