morbidology:This photograph shows Perry Smith and Truman Capote.Perry Smith was one of the two men who killed Herb Clutter, his wife, Bonnie, and their two children Nancy and Kenyon. Following his arrest, he and author, Truman Capote, developed an extremely close bond from behind bars. It was even speculated that Capote fell in love with Smith during the years of visiting him in prison. At the time, Capote was writing “In Cold Blood” which was a true crime book about the Clutter murders. Smith was sentenced to be executed, and he requested that Capote be a witness. The day before he was scheduled to die, he had sent Capote a telegram which read: “I’m anticipating and awaiting your visit. Please acknowledge by return wire when you expect to be here.”Capote never replied to the telegram and he never showed up to witness the execution. He later said that “the emotional buildup to the execution would be too much to bear.” His book, In Cold Blood, was released the following year and it elevated him to one of the most famous authors in the United States. He never wrote another book.
