Christopher Bell Indebted to Broken Chevy Alliance in Atlanta as Kyle Larson Suffers Betrayal

Wait 5 sec.

Lucky. That’s what Christopher Bell will be feeling after winning the 2025 Ambetter Health 400. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver broke his 19-race winless streak at Atlanta Motor Speedway after edging past Carson Hocevar and Kyle Larson in overtime. Driving the No. 20 Toyota, the Oklahoman was leading in the final lap when a wreck by Josh Berry resulted in a caution, effectively ending the race before Bell crossed the checkered flag. The win came thanks to Carson Hocevar. Despite the 22-year-old showing lightning-fast speed at the 1.5-mile track, his inexperience and lack of composure paved the way for Bell’s triumph and at the expense of fellow Chevy racer Kyle Larson.Christopher Bell is unsurprised by Hocevar’s actionsFew would have predicted a Christopher Bell victory. After all, the racer had qualified in 32nd place for the 2025 Ambetter Health 400, far behind a sea of Chevys and Fords that were showing far superior speed. In a bid to play to their strengths, Toyota tweaked Bell’s No. 20 Camry so that it was easy to handle, with the hopes that the driver would be able to capitalize on wrecks and restarts to climb up grid positions. The strategy worked exactly as it should have, and the 30-year-old found himself in the lead for the first time in the race during the final lap. That’s when the race took a twist. With two Chevy drivers hot on his heels, Carson Hocevar unintentionally assisted Christopher Bell for the lead, leaving Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson abandoned. Reflecting on the incident, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver said, “He’s (Hocevar) been around enough now that you know he’s going to be the aggressor. If there’s a hole, he’s going to take it. If there’s not a hole, he’s going to make one. He ultimately gave me the shove to pass or break through to lead the side draft tandem with myself and Kyle down the back straightaway.”At just 22 years old, Carson Hocevar is currently in his sophomore Cup Series season. The racer is not well versed in competing for wins, having occupied the back of the grid more often than not. Given his inexperience and lack of composure, it’s not entirely surprising that the Spire Motorsports driver made a mistake while attempting to find space for himself, and helped Bell unintentionally. The move came at the expense of Kyle Larson when the trio went three-wide, forcing the Hendrick Motorsports driver to finish third. Q. Carson Hocevar didn’t thrill other drivers today. There you are battling him. You don’t know when the cautions come out. Are you treading lightly around him? How do you race somebody who maybe, I don’t know, if you are not sure what he is going to do?CHRISTOPHER BELL ” Well,…— Claire B Lang (@ClaireBLang) February 24, 2025It was a bittersweet ending for the young racer, even though the second-place finish was his best Cup Series result, Hocevar can be proud. Taking accountability for his actions, the Michigan native said, “First off, apologies to Larson and HMS, Mr. H [Rick Hendrick], everybody. They help us out a lot, and I didn’t realize we weren’t racing back to the line.” The last lap caution played perfectly in Christopher Bell’s favor, who ended up securing the win despite both the Chevy drivers hoping to mount one last desperate challenge. However, Larson wasn’t the only Chevrolet driver he angered.Kyle Busch driving the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Z1 was fed up by Hocevar’s moves on the track. Hocevar slid into Busch at the end of stage one as he was climbing up the track and that move caused Rowdy to lose positions. In a fit of rage, the Chevrolet driver said on his team radio, “He’s a f—— d——–, I’m gonna wreck his a–”. It’s clear that Hocevar has made his enemies on the track after sliding Busch and stealing the win from Larson. However, if he chooses to mess with Larson again, ‘The Boss’ could step in as he has in the past.Could Rick Hendrick give Hocevar the Ross Chastain treatment? The parallels are uncanny. A few years ago, Ross Chastain was making headlines for all the wrong reasons after being caught up in several on-track incidents. The Trackhouse Racing driver had embraced the persona of being NASCAR’s ‘bad boy’, to the detriment of Kyle Larson who was caught up in wrecks several times because of the racer’s aggressive driving style even though both drivers were competing under the Chevy umbrella. In many ways, it’s looking like history is repeating itself with Carson Hocevar, and many are wondering if the young racer could face Rick Hendrick’s wrath. The Hendrick Motorsports team owner told the media amidst the controversies with Ross Chastain in 2023, “I don’t care if he’s driving a Chevrolet if he wrecks our cars. I don’t care. I’ve told Chevrolet that. If you wreck us, you’re going to get it back. If you don’t do it, they’ll run all over you. I’m loyal to Chevrolet, but when somebody runs over us, then I expect my guys to hold their ground. I’m not going to ask them to yield just because of Chevrolet. He doesn’t have to be that aggressive.”The 75-year-old can come down hard when he needs to, a lesson Ross Chastain learned the hard way. Could Rick Hendrick issue stern words for Carson Hocevar after the events at Atlanta Motor Speedway? Unlikely, considering that it’s the first such instance, and the racer has already apologized for his actions. However, if similar incidents continue, the team owner will take action where he sees fit to issue an appropriate payback. However, Ryan Blaney feels the Cup Series grid might do the same, anyway.Blaney was also caught up in the Hocevar drama, calling him a ‘moron’ on team radio as Hocevar bumped him going into a turn. Blaney, aware of Hocevar’s aggressive nature, was irate and said after the race, “I was hoping that he’d learn this past off-season, but I don’t know if he has. We’ll see if he learns. If not, someone will teach him.”Hocevar seems to have made a villain of himself with a few too many important drivers and it could come back to bite him.
