Despite Mets’ Desperate Need for Infielder “OMG” Star’s Chances Of a Reunion Remain Low

Wait 5 sec.

The Mets suffer a major setback as their second baseman dislocates his shoulder! They have already endured a rough start with Nick Madrigal’s shoulder injury. However, that doesn’t guarantee the Mets’ chances of revisiting Jose Iglesias. While Iglesias’ name has emerged as the favorite to fill Madrigal’s gap in their lineup, the chances of a reunion look grim. Why is it so?Despite the Mets’ shortstop making it clear about returning for the 2025 season, the expectations are less of him to get on the playing field. The New York Mets signed him for a minor league deal even after knowing that he hadn’t appeared in the major league games for two years. He only managed four home runs and 26 RBIs in 85 games, slashing .337/.381/.448. This may be the reason a reunion with the Mets seems unlikely. Makes sense? Jose Iglesias, ever since he became a free agent, had found no takers yet. Iglesias, 35, batted at an average of .335 and was one of the club’s fan favorites, considering that his “OMG” anthem became an instant hit. However, that doesn’t seem enough to reunite with him, given that David Stearns believed in some flexibility in the role of an infielder, citing, “Having some flexibility there in that role is, frankly, probably needed for us right now.” And signing Iglesias back might hold the Mets back from carrying out that action, isn’t it?Well, maybe, as the Mets still consider Iglesias not fit for the roster, despite a need to replace Madrigal as the backup infielder. However, with no experience in the major league game for nearly two years, the Mets have their reasons to think that it may not be the right call to bring him back. So, is there any other way the Mets are looking to fix their roster?Maybe the New York Mets should look to make some internal changes. The Mets look for an internal replacement for Madrigal after unlikely signing of Jose IglesiasWith Jose Iglesias no longer a likely option as an infielder, the Mets could turn to Luisangel Acuña, Donovan Walton, or even Brett Baty, who have been signed in the offseason for the minor league games. While Walton could play at shortstop and Baty could at second base, Acuna’s display of excellence with both bat and glove makes him a great choice to fill the void caused by Madrigal’s injury. Sounds fair?Acuna was signed by the Mets in 2023 and traded by the Texas Rangers. In just 14 games that he played in 2024, the shortstop managed to hit three home runs, with six RBIs and a batting average of .308. Baty could also be a great choice, given that he had an average of .229, with 16 RBIs and four home runs. But that’s not all! The Mets have even signed Pete Alonso back, but, given their roster is still incomplete, they may need to make a quick call of choosing between Acuna and Baty as their preferred infielder. Who do you think can be the infielder as a replacement for Madrigal for the New York Mets?
