The United States wants the UN Security Council to vote on a resolution about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine before the General Assembly meets to discuss the war, diplomats said on Saturday, as reported by Reuters. This move puts the US in disagreement with Ukraine and the European Union, who have been working on their own resolution for a vote in the General Assembly on Monday. If the Security Council approves the US resolution in the morning, Washington and Moscow could argue that another vote in the General Assembly is not needed.Security council deadlock and US planThe Security Council, which has 15 members, was already set to meet on Ukraine on Monday afternoon. However, the US has asked China, the current president of the Council, to move the meeting earlier for the vote.A decision has not yet been made, diplomats said. For the resolution to pass, at least nine countries must vote in favour, and none of the five permanent members—US, Russia, China, Britain, or France—can use their veto power. However, Russia has repeatedly used its veto to block action on Ukraine, which is why the General Assembly has had to step in with its own resolutions condemning Moscow and demanding that Russian troops leave. Also Read: | US offers UN resolution on war in Ukraine that stops far short of competing European statementUS Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged countries to support the resolution, saying, “Through support of this resolution, we affirm that this conflict is awful, that the UN can help end it, and that peace is possible.
