Since the resurgence of the Mouvement du 23 Mars (M23) armed group in late 2022, multiple humanitarian crises linked to the ensuing conflict have destabilized the province of North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This has led to new and prolonged displacements among affected populations. Many of these internally displaced persons (IDPs) have sought refuge in displacement sites and collective centres across North Kivu. Despite a ceasefire agreement between the Congolese Government and the M23 group on 30 July 2024, conflict intensified in late October 2024 and has continued since. As a result, and in order to better understand the intentions of IDPs vis-a-vis durable solutions of returns in North Kivu, IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) conducted a return intentions survey as part of its registration operations in collective settlements in North Kivu between 7 and 18 November and between 16 and 21 December 2024. This was undertaken in partnership with the Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) cluster. Data was collected from over 200,000 IDPs.The aim of the assessment was to capture data on the future intentions of IDP households through direct interviews. This consisted of information pertaining to the potential return or relocation of registered IDPs - if they felt it was safe to do so - including the following options:▪ Return to place of origin.▪ Relocation to another locality of choice.▪ Move abroad.▪ Transfer to a different site.▪ Undecided.Information on demographics, vulnerabilities, and requirements for returning were then gathered to further inform humanitarian response.
