(Photo by ANI)Eight people belonging to the Thakur community were arrested on Friday while a search is on to nab several others for allegedly assaulting members of a Dalit groom’s wedding procession following a row over playing DJ music in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr.The police have booked 29 people of the community and around 50 other unidentified individuals over the incident.According to the complaint, the procession was attacked in Dhamrawali village on Thursday night as it passed through the upper caste locality. Around a dozen Dalits were allegedly left injured after they were attacked with lathis and stones. Officers said the injured were admitted to hospital for treatment and discharged by Friday evening.A First Information Report (FIR) in this regard was lodged at Kotwali (Rural) police station soon after the incident but the police allegedly took no action until Bulandshahr BJP MP Bhola Singh intervened.MP Singh, who is the national general secretary of the BJP’s Dalit and Backward caste cell, wrote to the Union Home Ministry and took up the issue with the party headquarters in Lucknow, besides the Chief Minister’s Office.“This is an unfortunate incident and those who have displayed casteist bias should be dealt with an iron hand so that others may not repeat this in future. I will personally monitor the police action to ensure that those named in the FIR and the others involved do not remain at large,” the MP told local reporters on Friday.Rijul Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police, Bulandshahr, said eight police teams have been formed to nab the culprits. “Many of the accused have fled from the village but we hope to catch them soon.” © The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:BulandshahrDalit atrocities
