The cabinet on Thursday declared a ban on trawling off the coast of Kerala from June 10 to July 31. The government said the ban would come into effect at midnight on June 9. The government enforces the trawling ban to conserve increasingly finite marine resources to protect the livelihoods of lakhs of traditional fishers. The prohibition of deep-sea trawlers also helps preserve natural fish hatcheries during the breeding season in the monsoon. The government has tasked the Coastal Police and enlisted fishers and trawling boat organizations to enforce the ban. Published - June 05, 2025 06:58 pm IST
