According to available information, he was taken to Amritsar on May 29 and 30 and then referred to PGI Chandigarh on May 31.A prisoner from Hoshiarpur, who was brought to PGI Chandigarh for medical treatment, escaped from police custody.The accused, identified as Gopi, a resident of Hoshiarpur, was lodged in Hoshiarpur Jail in connection with two NDPS Act cases registered against him in 2021.Gopi had been in judicial custody since April 19, 2021. For medical treatment, he was first referred from Central Jail Hoshiarpur to GMC Amritsar and subsequently to PGI, Chandigarh.According to available information, he was taken to Amritsar on May 29 and 30 and then referred to PGI Chandigarh on May 31.The escape occurred on the night of June 2 around 8.30 pm from PGI, where he was under the supervision of Punjab Police personnel. At the time of the incident, ASI Vijay Kumar and ASI Suram Chand from Hoshiarpur Police were on duty as escorts. Following the escape, ASI Satpal Singh, the MHC at Police Lines Hoshiarpur, immediately informed senior officials.In response, Chandigarh Police’s Sector-11 police station registered the statements of the involved officers, and departmental action has been recommended against them.Meamwhile, an FIR has been registered under Sections 261 and 262 of the BNS, and a detailed investigation is underway.Story continues below this adMultiple teams have been formed to trace the absconding accused, with search operations ongoing across Chandigarh and various locations in Punjab.
