The Government of India has launched a new system called DIGIPIN to provide precise identification of any address. It aims to provide “Address as a Service” (AaaS) across the country. It has been developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). The NRSC comes under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, the DIGIPIN will lead to secure and efficient communication between the citizens and government and private entities. It is an “open-source, interoperable, geo-coded and grid-based digital address system”.According to the website of India Post, DIGIPIN is a geospatial reference based on the exact coordinates of a location. It comes in the form of a ten-character alphanumeric code. This contrasts with a postal address based on locality and house number. The new digital addressing system is aimed at providing more precise address management compared to the existing PIN Codes. India Post says, “DIGIPIN simplifies address management by providing precise location-based identification, especially in areas with unstructured or changing addresses. It also helps in areas where no clear address exists, such as rural regions, forests, and oceans.”How To Use DIGIPIN?To find out your DIGIPIN, you can use the Know Your DIGIPIN application. You will need to visit the website (https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home). It's important to ensure that your web browser can access your location. By accessing your location, the application will generate the DIGIPIN. India Post underlines that DIGIPIN does not compromise a user’s privacy. It also does not store any private data. It can facilitate the effective delivery of services during emergencies as well as for meeting logistics and customer service requirements. Regarding its accuracy, India Post says, “Each DIGIPIN code represents an approx. 4m x 4m square...the accuracy of DIGIPIN created for any location might depend upon the accuracy of the GNSS location capture device you are using.” ‘Know Your PIN Code’The Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications also launched the digital platform named 'Know Your PIN Code'. "The six-digit PIN Code system, introduced in 1972, has served as the backbone of India’s postal delivery. However, recognising the need to modernise and refine its geographic accuracy, the Department undertook a national geofencing exercise across all postal jurisdictions to geo-reference all the pin code boundaries of the country," a PIB relesase said. Based on this, the Department of Post has now launched the ‘Know Your PIN Code’ web application, which uses GNSS location features to allow users to:Identify the correct PIN Code based on the location.Submit feedback on PIN Code accuracy for continuous refinement of pin code dataset. For more details, click here..
