The alleged incident took place on May 13 at the Rajendranagar police station in Hyderabad.The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday took suo motu cognisance of a media report on an auto rickshaw driver’s death in Hyderabad, allegedly after he was subjected to “physical torture” by the police, and sought a detailed report from the Telangana director general of police.The alleged incident took place on May 13 at the Rajendranagar police station in Hyderabad. Auto rickshaw driver Mohammed Irfan died hours after he was summoned to the police station for counselling in a marital dispute, leading his family to allege that he was subjected to police brutality. The police said he had died of a cardiac arrest.Also Read | Autorickshaw driver in Hyderabad dies after ‘counselling’ at police station; kin accuse cops of brutalityThe NHRC said that the media reports, “if true, raise a serious violation of the human rights of the victim”, and issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Telangana, “calling for a detailed report in the matter, within two weeks”.“According to the media report, carried on 14th May, 2025, the victim was having some issues with his wife, who had taken him to the Police Station to resolve the issue. After counselling the couple, the man was taken to a room where he was badly beaten up by policemen with rubber belts. After an hour, when he came out of the Police Station, he started vomiting and collapsed. He was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors,” the NHRC said in a press release.Speaking to indianexpress.com, Ch Srinivas, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rajendranagar zone), had denied allegations of police excesses and cited CCTV visuals to suggest the same.Irfan, according to the police, was summoned to the Rajendranagar police station for counselling after his wife, Nishad Begum, alleged that he was in an extramarital relationship with another woman.“Following a quarrel, both Irfan and the woman were brought to the police station around 9 pm by their family members for counselling. The police counselled both parties and advised them against maintaining further contact,” DCP Srinivas had said.
