HighlightsFood Items: Market price data collected during the first week of June 2025 indicates no major changes in the prices of key food commodities compared to the previous week. On a year-on-year basis, the prices of salt, cooking oil, and rice (Palawi) have increased by 20%, 17%, and 5%, respectively, while prices of other food items have declined. Compared to the two-year average, most food item prices show a significant decline, except for salt and cooking oil. Additionally, food prices remain considerably elevated compared to the same period before the government transition, with the exception of wheat grain, wheat flour, and cooking oil. Although the table shows national average prices, they vary widely across provinces due to market size, transport costs, remoteness, and border proximity. Border provinces often have lower prices due to easier access to imported goods, while large provincial markets act as supply hubs for the rest of the provinces.Vegetable Items: Vegetable prices have further declined this week with the increase in market supply from local production. Compared to last week, tomato, potato and onion prices have declined by 16.5%, 5.8% and 3.2%, respectively. Similarly, yearon-year comparisons show a significant decline. Moreover, prices vary significantly across provinces; Tomato prices ranged from 14–50 AFN/kg, Potato from 12–32 AFN/kg, and Onion from 8–30 AFN/kg.Labour Market and NFIs: The national average labour availability for casual workers stands at 2.4 days of work per week, with the unskilled labour wage averaging AFN 313 per day in the country. Moreover, compared to the two-year average, there has been no improvement in labour availability across the country. Prices of non-food items such as fertilizers (DAP and urea) and improved seeds showed negligible week-on-week changes. Similarly, year-on-year comparisons indicate a slight decline in the prices of DAP, urea, and improved seeds, while the price of concentrate animal feed has slightly increased. With the approach of Eid-ul-Adha, the price of 1-year old female sheep has slightly increased by 1.7% compared to last week, driven by higher demand for slaughtering during the festive period. This rise in sheep prices has contributed to a 1.6% improvement in the terms of trade (ToT) for pastoralists, enhancing their purchasing power slightly.Diesel: The national average diesel price stood at 57.2 AFN per litre during the first week of June 2025, reflecting a negligible increase of 0.8% from the previous week but declined by 4% compared to the same time last year. On the global market, the average diesel price stands at $1.18 per litre as of 02 June 2025.
