The tremor was recorded early evening on Sunday, July 6th, 2025, at 6:21 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 108. km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.7, and Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 5.5.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Ambunti (pop. 2,100) located 99 km from the epicenter, and Aitape (pop. 5,500) 133 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake. If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeJul 6, 2025 08:21:50 UTC - Local time at epicenterSunday, Jul 6, 2025, at 06:21 pm (GMT +10)Statusconfirmed (manually revised)Magnitude5.3Depth108 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude4.0593°S / 141.9282°EEast Sepik Province, Papua New GuineaAlso near: Indonesia 139 km (86 mi) awaySeismic antipode4.0593°N / 38.072°WQuality73 seismic stationsShaking intensityIII Weak shaking near epicenterFelt1 reportPrimary data sourceUSGS (United States Geological Survey)Nearest volcanoKairinu (185 km / 115 mi)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeOvercast Clouds 20.4°C (69 F), humidity: 98%, wind: 1 m/s (2 kts) from SEstimated seismic energy released5.6 x 1012 joules (1.56 gigawatt hours, equivalent to 1344 tons of TNT) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 5.3 | about seismic energy19 minutes ago reported feltJul 6, 2025 08:21 GMT / Jul 6, 2025 06:21 pm (GMT +10)Lat / Lng: -4.0593 / 141.9282: 100 km W of Ambunti, Papua New GuineaSource: USGSOther sources: BMKG: 5.5 / 110 km, GFZ: 5.6 / 10 km, 1 more...Detail info | Read user reports | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-21931120',-4.05930,141.92820,'19 minutes ago: Mag. 5.3, 100 km W of Ambunti, Papua New Guinea',html,'quakes-7-24.png',30,30,15,15,126]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="¬Felt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in Papua New GuineaNearby placesThe closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Ambunti, a town with 2,100 inhabitants in Papua New Guinea, in 100 km (62 mi) distance east of the epicenter. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)IV: Light shaking1237–237 km (147–147 mi)237 km (147 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (1 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 20 km2 (8 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 8 km (5 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Jul 6, 2025 06:21 pm (GMT +10)19 minutes ago5.3108 km0 km - This quake100 km W of Ambunti, Papua New GuineaMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksPrevious quakes in the same area of this earthquakeStrongest in 2 yearsThe earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Papua New Guinea in over 2 years.
