Sonay Kartal’s Wimbledon run could be a career-changing moment for the young British star. The 23-year-old is the last British woman standing in the singles draw and faces Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a place in the quarter-finals.Kartal is the last British woman left in the singles drawGettyKartal has already banked £240,000 for reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon, this jumps to £400,000 if she gets to the last eight. She will leapfrog Emma Radcuanu in the WTA rankings thanks to her stunning run and she could be British number one by the end of the fortnight.Raducanu and Kartal have long been rivals, coming up through the LTA system together.A video was unearthed of them playing out an amazing point when they were just nine years old back in 2011.Raducanu’s assent to professional tennis has garnered more media attention by virtue of her winning the US Open as a teenager.“We grew up playing each other,” Kartal said. “I think my earliest memory is maybe under-nines up until under-14s.“We’d be in the same national tournaments and we’d always end up meeting each other in the finals and we’d alternate almost every week who won.”Raducanu was always the darling of the LTA system, whereas Kartal has battled injury problems that left her struggling to pick up a racket.Kartal said: “When I was growing up, I kind of did quite a lot of tournaments on my own just because I couldn’t afford to pay a coach week in and week out.“It helped me develop as a teenager, grow up super-fast, made me much more mature, hold myself accountable to a lot of things. My story is a little different to Emma’s because I have had some injury problems that have hampered me.Kartal and Raducanu have been rivals since they were children“I was out quite a lot of years injured as a teenager. I didn’t pick up a racquet for a couple years. “I was kind of a bit inconsistent as I guess I was going through teenage years. When I was younger, I don’t think I really deserved to kind of have the funding to be honest with you. I think I was too inconsistent.”Kartal found out she will be making her debut on Centre Court on Sunday just before she played her doubles match, and she has no intention of it being her last time this fortnight.“It’s a huge honour to play on that court. A court that you dream of,” she said.“The way I am looking at it is that it’s a slightly bigger Court One. Warming up on Court One a couple of days ago will help me. I will feel much better walking out on Centre.“I know I am far from finished yet.
