Telangana government has issued orders permitting the daily work hours to be increased to 10 hours at commercial establishments (other than shops), from earlier eight hours. However, the weekly work hours remain the same, which should not exceed 48 hours. The Government Order issued by the principal secretary of the Telangana Labour, Employment and Factories department on Saturday (July 5, 2025) has details on rest between work hours, wages for overtime and other details. “Daily Hours for an employee shall not exceed 10 hours and weekly working hours shall be 48 hours. For the work done beyond 48 hours, employee is entitled for overtime wages,” according to the G.O.It also stated that no employee shall be required or allowed to work for more than six hours in any day unless he/she has had an interval for rest of not less than 30 minutes.“The periods of work of an employee in an establishment shall be so arranged that, along with his / her interval for rest, they shall not spread over for more than twelve hours on any day,” it added. According to the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988, “Commercial establishment means an establishment which carries on any trade, business, profession or any work in connection with or incidental or ancilliary to any such trade, business or profession or which is a clerical department of a factory or an industrial undertaking or which is a commercial or trading or banking or insurance establishment and includes an establishment under the management and control of a co operative society, an establishment of a factory or an industrial undertaking which falls outside the scope of the Factories Act, 1948, (Central Act 63 of 1948), and such other establishment as the Government may, by notification declare to be a commercial establishment for the purposes of this Act but does not include a shop.”Published - July 05, 2025 05:27 pm IST
