MP Rebecca Buttigieg said that members of parliament should vote in line with their conscience when a bill on Voluntary Assisted Euthanasia (VAE) is tabled in parliament.“It will be the Whip’s decision, but I personally believe that in such situations MPs should have a clear conscience and be granted the liberty to vote in line with their conscience,” Buttigieg said in an interview with MaltaToday. The parliamentary secretary for reforms stated that she personally felt this was a matter of conscience, but that Labour MPs had supported a manifesto that made reference to euthanasia when running for office.A survey launched by MaltaToday showed how the majority of people believe MPs should be allowed a free vote.Buttigieg went on to say that no government MP has expressed disagreement with euthanasia. With that being said, the parliamentary group discussion has been centred more around the parameters of the proposal. The parliamentary secretary insisted that government would not be tabling a bill in parliament in the near future. Before a bill is drafted, the feedback from the public consultation would have to be analysed in depth.•
