On one of the busiest weekends of the summer, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a groundstop at Orlando International Airport (MCO) for Sunday afternoon. The order halts all inbound flights from entering the airport due to the severe weather expected for the area.Credit: Inside the MagicThe FAA issued the groundstop from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., but the halt to incoming flights caused a ripple effect across the flight system for MCO. Currently, the airport is experiencing delays of at least one hour and fifteen minutes per flight.Orlando International Airport was expected to see millions of travelers over the Fourth of July weekend. Today was the busiest day, with an expected 175,000 travelers coming through the airport.These delays will upset flight patterns for the remainder of the day, and there could be another round of severe thunderstorms later in the day. However, those guests will struggle to get home after the long weekend.Guests were especially interested in heading to Magic Kingdom today for the farewell of Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. The Carolinas are bracing for the impact of Tropical Storm Chantel, while the Midwest, South, and Northeast are bracing for severe thunderstorms.MCO is urging flyers to check with their airline to see how long their flight will be delayed and to make arrangements if their flight is cancelled.
