The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the state has received 159.4 mm of rainfall as against the normal of 14.4 mm of rainfall it is supposed to receive normally.Monsoon arrived in Maharashtra on May 24, as opposed to its normal June 5 date of arrival. Even before its arrival, pre-monsoon rains had lashed the state. Due to the formation of a low pressure area over the Arabian Sea, heavy rainfall was reported across the state which had caused flood like situations in many parts of the state. Almost every district had reported rainfall which had taken people by surprise.Every district in Maharashtra reported a large excess of rainfall. Pune has reported 1,715 per cent of its normal rainfall. Ahilyanagar got 948 per cent, Solapur — 497 per cent , Amravati received 1,824 per cent, Gondia 971 per cent, Nashik 749 per cent, Dhule 1,020 per cent, Nandurbar 703 per cent. This was a rare May which saw such heavy rainfall. For the summer season — March 1 to May 28 — the country has received an excess of 31 per cent rainfall. As against the normal of 123.3 mm of rainfall it is supposed to receive, India got 161.5 mm of rainfall.Monsoon has so far advanced to most parts of Maharashtra, with the IMD predicting further advancement in the next two or three days. On Sunday, Lavasa reported 24.5 mm of rainfall, while Shivajinagar reported 1.5 mm.
