Liverpool have been told they may run into possible danger next season unless they sign a new centre-back this summer. The Premier League champions have been the most active team by far less than a week after the end of the campaign, with one new arrival already confirmed.Liverpool have already announced their first summer signingGettyJeremie Frimpong has arrived from Bayer Leverkusen as a direct replacement for right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose early move to Real Madrid has now been confirmed. But there are more deals already in the works, with Liverpool in talks with Leverkusen over a potential £100million-plus deal for playmaker Florian Wirtz, with Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez another top target. With major doubts over the future of Darwin Nunez, it’s assumed the Reds will also target a new striker this summer. But there is another area of the squad that desperately needs strengthening, according to Liverpool supporter and EFL legend Adebayo Akinfenwa.“I think this was in the making for a while,” Akinfenwa told talkSPORT on The Sports Bar.“We didn’t bring anybody else in bar Federico Chiesa last summer, so I think they knew what they needed to do and identified what we need.“They know we need to full-backs, we’ve got Jeremie Frimpong over the line already, hopefully we get Milos Kerkez done next and Wirtz is a very good player – to bring in those three players, the business is good.“But I still think we need a centre-back and a midfielder. “Ibrahima Konate has one year left on his contract, Joe Gomez is just coming back from injury – if one of them gets injured next season, all of a sudden we’ve got a problem. So I do think we need another centre-back.“But listen, the season only finished last week and we’re already trying to bring in three players, so there’s still a long time to go. Hopefully it continues in this manner and it looks like we mean business.”Van Dijk has committed to a new deal, but Konate is entering the final year of his contract and has a troubling injury recordAFPSlot is already hard at work planning for season No.2 at LiverpoolAFPAs well as players coming in, there are expected to be plenty of outgoings at Anfield too as Slot refines his squad after a title-winning first campaign.Akinfenwa believes Liverpool’s end of season slump showed how Slot doesn’t trust some of his squad players, and the former striker expects those stars to move on – naming Nunez and Harvey Elliott as possible exits.“It’s thought that Darwin Nunez will go and there’s a lot of talk about Luis Diaz to Barcelona or teams in Saudi Arabia,” said the boyhood Reds fan.“There’s talk about Diogo Jota leaving as well, and I really like Jota, he’s a brilliant finisher and I’m a big fan, but he gets injured a lot.“I think it’s time for Nunez to move on, but if he does he will do well, just like Antony after leaving Man United, I really do believe that. He has a lot of good attributes, but the way Liverpool play under Arne Slot just doesn’t benefit him.“But if Nunez and Jota do go, you’ve got to bring more bodies into that front line. One of the reasons we were so successful is we had five attackers we could chop and change and they would all contribute goals.Nunez is a cult hero at Anfield, but even his biggest fans have been left frustrated this season having scored just five Premier League goalsAFPElliott is appreciated by Liverpool fans, but his lack of regular minutes last season shows he isn’t trusted by Slot and he could leave this summer, says AkinfenwaGettyAkinfenwa has tipped Liverpool to challenge for back-to-back Premier League titles – as long as they get their summer recruitment rightInstagram: @akinfenwa“It’s the same in midfield. There’s talk of Harvey Elliott leaving – I don’t want Harvey Elliott to go. I love Harvey Elliott. I want Harvey Elliott to stay.“But I do think what was clear at the end of the season is Slot didn’t trust the squad. You started to see the fatigue kicking in.“So if Harvey Elliott does go, or any other players, you need to bring in bodies to replace them, because if we had more players Slot trusted we would have won more than just the Premier League title this season. “But I’m not greedy, I’ll take the Premier League!”Asked if he feels this Liverpool team, strengthened in the summer transfer window, can secure back-to-back Premier League crowns, Akinfenwa added: “Yeah, I really do.“But now all of a sudden that comes with pressure now. Slot had no pressure coming in. “But I like his demeanour. He said, ‘Look, man, the season was done. As soon as we won it at Tottenham, it was on party mode’. “But he said, ‘Listen, when we come back to pre-season, it’s going to be hard, and I’ll know if I’ve got winners’.“I like everything that comes out of his mouth in regards to the way he talks. So fingers crossed it’s back to back.”
