Caitlin Clark’s Teammate Strikes Fear into Marina Mabrey as Fever’s Comeback Bid Falls Short vs Connecticut

Wait 5 sec.

If we had to rate how the offseason turned out for the Connecticut Sun, it would probably be in negative figures. They lost almost everything. Head coach, all five starters and DeWanna Bonner, the literal heartbeat of the team. So, when they started the season winless, no one was exactly shocked. But what indeed surprised everyone was they broke that ugly streak… against the very team that snatched their key pieces. A Caitlin Clark-less Fever just couldn’t get it done against the depleted Sun.But did that win come easy? Not even close. The Fever came in after two back-to-back losses. Connecticut, meanwhile, was still hunting for that first W. So both teams were desperate to turn things around. The game tipped off with Lexie Hull getting things going for Indiana, and just like that, the Fever took the early lead.Indiana actually held it down in the first quarter, thanks to 10 solid points from Aliyah Boston and five from Sophie Cunningham. But the Sun came out swinging in the second. They managed to grab the lead, but the Fever stayed close, due to Kelsey Mitchell dropping five of her own.  At halftime, the Sun had a narrow 43-39 lead. Then came the third and that’s where Marina Mabrey lit it up. She nailed three triples, and the Sun cruised to a double-digit lead deep into the fourth. Honestly, with the way injuries were stacking up for Indiana, it looked like curtains. "DB coming in at the end trying to take that sh— from us, I was like Jesus, here she goes."Hilarious and incredibly real line from Marina Mabrey after facing former Sun teammate DeWanna Bonner tonight! Bonner had nine points in Q4 to power Indiana's comeback attempt.— Emily Adams (@eaadams6) May 31, 2025And Bonner, she’d been quiet so far this season – just 6.2 points a game across five outings. So, most people probably didn’t expect much. Well, she proved that you should never sleep on DB. The Fever stormed back with a 17-0 run in just over three minutes, flipping the script entirely and going up 75-73 with 3:16 left. And it was Bonner who lit the fuse with three massive threes, nine of her 13 total points coming in the fourth. The two sides started trading bombs after that, but the Sun stayed calm and walked away with the 85-83 win. Still, that fourth quarter comeback had Sun captain Marina Mabrey shook. She dropped a season-high 26 points, but when asked about Bonner’s insane takeover, she just laughed, “DB coming in at the end trying to take that s–t from us, I was like Jesus, here she goes.” Bonner being clutch isn’t news, though. She’s made a whole career out of these moments. Remember that game against the Dream when she hit a career-high seven threes and carried the Sun to an 80-67 dub? And Mabrey knows exactly who she was dealing with.  Last year, the two built a pretty tight bond when Mabrey joined the Sun midseason from Chicago. Bonner welcomed her with open arms, and even today Mabrey called her “one of the greatest leaders” she’s ever played with. But well, the offseason had other plans and now they’re on opposite sides.Speaking of plans, the injury bug seems to have a very brutal one for Indiana right now. With Caitlin Clark already out, Injuries keep piling up for the FeverWell, if you thought Caitlin Clark being out was the worst that could happen to the Indiana Fever, things just got even messier. Heading into Friday’s clash with the Connecticut Sun, the big headline was still Clark’s absence due to a left quadriceps strain. But by the end of the game, that storyline had some unwanted company because now the Fever are dealing with what looks like a full-blown injury crisis. We know that CC has been ruled out for at least two weeks, and while the exact moment of the injury is still a bit of a mystery, we did see her holding a compress on her leg during last Saturday’s matchup against the Liberty. So that left a big question mark: who’s stepping up in her place?Sydney Colson slid into the starting spot in Clark’s absence. She was doing her thing… until she couldn’t anymore. Just minutes into the first quarter against the Sun, Colson got tangled up with Jacy Sheldon while diving for a loose ball. Sheldon landed awkwardly on Colson’s leg, and Colson hit the floor. The Sun, of course, capitalized on the 5-on-4 and scored a layup while Fever coach Stephanie White quickly called a timeout. Colson stayed down for a bit, wincing in clear pain. Though she did get up and stayed for the huddle, she limped back to the locker room under her own power. Soon after, the team ruled her out for the rest of the game. As of now, her status for Tuesday’s rematch against the Mystics remains unknown. And if she can’t go, and Clark is still out (which she is), the Fever won’t have a single true point guard available. But as if that wasn’t bad enough, the injury crisis wasn’t finished. Midway through the fourth quarter, Sophie Cunningham took another brutal hit. She was trying to set an off-ball screen for Kelsey Mitchell when Sheldon barreled right through her chest. Cunningham tried to regain her footing, but in the process, she rolled her right ankle, the same one she injured in the preseason, which already cost her the first two games of the season.May 4, 2025; Iowa City, IA, USA; Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham (8) reacts during the third quarter against the Brazil National Team at Carver-Haweye Arena. Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn ImagesShe hit the hardwood, clearly in a ton of pain. The medical staff rushed out, and she lay there for a while before eventually being helped off the court. Cunningham didn’t return, and just like that, another key piece might be gone for a while. For the record, Colson finished scoreless in nine minutes, and Cunningham had 10 points in 27 minutes before exiting. Now, with the Fever sitting at 2-4, things are looking pretty rough. Clark remains out until at least June 10 (the earliest she could return, when they face the Atlanta Dream), and if Colson and Cunningham also miss time, Indiana’s backcourt might be completely wiped out. No PGs, no scoring spark, and a lot of uncertainty ahead. The post Caitlin Clark’s Teammate Strikes Fear into Marina Mabrey as Fever’s Comeback Bid Falls Short vs Connecticut appeared first on EssentiallySports.
