The tremor was recorded in the morning on Friday, May 30th, 2025, at 9:22 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.7.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.In Shikotan (pop. 2,100) located 62 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.Weak shaking might have been felt in Yuzhno-Kurilsk (pop. 7,800) located 134 km from the epicenter.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake. If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeMay 29, 2025 22:23:04 UTC - Local time at epicenterThursday, May 29, 2025, at 10:23 pm (Universal Time GMT +0)StatusconfirmedMagnitude5.6Depth63 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude43.8947°N / 147.2598°ERussiaAlso near: Japan 140 km (87 mi) awaySeismic antipode43.8947°S / 32.74°WShaking intensityIV Light shaking near epicenterFelt1 reportPrimary data sourceEMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre)Nearest volcanoBerutarube (68 km / 42 mi)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeOvercast Clouds 15.1°C (59 F), humidity: 68%, wind: 4 m/s (7 kts) from NNWEstimated seismic energy released1.6 x 1013 joules (4.4 gigawatt hours, equivalent to 3788 tons of TNT or 0.2 atomic bombs!) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 5.6 | about seismic energy10 minutes ago reported feltMay 29, 2025 22:23 GMT / May 29, 2025 10:23 pm (Universal Time)Lat / Lng: 43.8947 / 147.2598: Kuril IslandsSource: EMSCOther sources: GFZ: 5.7 / 10 km, RENASS: 5.5 / 10 kmDetail info | Read user reports | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-21816190',43.89470,147.25980,'10 minutes ago: Mag. 5.6, Kuril Islands',html,'quakes-7-24.png',30,30,15,15,126]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="&notFelt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in KamchatkaNearby placesThe closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Shikotan, a town with 2,100 inhabitants in Russia, in 44 km (28 mi) distance west of the epicenter. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)III: Weak shaking1113–113 km (70–70 mi)113 km (70 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (1 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 40 km2 (15 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 11 km (7 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)May 29, 2025 10:23 pm (Universal Time)10 minutes ago5.663 km0 km - This quakeNorth Pacific Ocean, 44 km E of Shikotan, Sakhalin Oblast, RussiaMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 25 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 217 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 8 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)Mag. 7 or higher: 0.1 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 9.6 years)Mag. 6 or higher: 0.87 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.1 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 5.4 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 40 quakes per year (or 3.4 quakes per month)Mag. 3 or higher: 113 quakes per year (or 9.4 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 202 quakes per year (or 16.8 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 219 quakes per year (or 18.2 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
