A 62-year-old man allegedly shot his wife dead before turning the gun on himself and dying by suicide early on Sunday morning in Worli. Preliminary police investigations suggest the incident may have stemmed from ongoing family disputes.The accused, Rajmohan Nampilley, a resident of Siddharth Nagar, allegedly shot his 58-year-old wife, Lata, while she was asleep in the hall of their second-floor apartment in Pankaj Mansion. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning.According to Worli police officials, the sound of the gunshot woke up Nampilley’s nephew, who had stayed over and was sleeping in the passage between two bedrooms. When he confronted Nampilley about the loud noise and smoke, he was allegedly told by him that there had been a small short circuit and that everything was fine. Nampilley then asked him to go back to sleep.Minutes later, Nampilley allegedly went out and sat on the building staircase, where he allegedly shot himself in the head.The incident came to light when the newspaper vendor discovered Nampilley lying in a pool of blood on the staircase and alerted the building’s watchman. Upon entering the flat, the watchman discovered Lata’s lifeless body and alerted the family and police.Both Nampilley and Lata were rushed to KEM Hospital in Parel, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.Police recovered the country-made pistol used in the crime from the scene.Story continues below this adA preliminary inquiry revealed that Nampilley had previously worked as an electrician in Qatar and had returned to India a few years ago. His son was married in 2023.An official said that Nampally lived with his wife, son and daughter-in-law in the flat, and there had been frequent quarrels between the father and son about living separately. Nampilley wished for his son to live independently. However, this desire often led to conflicts within the family, particularly between Nampilley and his wife, who supported their son.Senior Inspector Nilesh Salunkhe-Patil of Worli police station confirmed that initial investigations point to family discord as the trigger for the crime. “The incident appears to have occurred due to ongoing family issues,” he said.A case of murder has been registered against Nampilley.
