Plans to build a massive 60-warehouse complex on ODZ land between Għargħur and Madliena have sparked outrage among residents, who are calling the proposal “insane” and “ridiculous”.The project, pushed by tuna magnate Anthony Azzopardi and now under his company Anchor Properties, revives a 20-year-old application to develop land off Triq Santa Katerina—just off the busy Triq tal-Balal, according to Times of Malta.Although Azzopardi’s spokesperson claims the site won’t be used by Azzopardi Fisheries, the current application covers a 2,100 sqm warehouse and is part of a larger, industrial-scale complex. And residents? They’re fuming. Locals fear their quiet, one-way residential lane will become a chaotic access road for over 150 vehicles during weekday peak hours and even more on weekends. They’re also warning of rising noise, pollution and plummeting property values, questioning why this isn’t being built in an actual industrial park. The saga stretches back to 2005, stalled when the Malta Resources Authority objected due to restoration policies for depleted quarries. But in January this year, a new mineral report was quietly uploaded, and activity resumed. Now, after years of silence, everything seems to be moving again—fast. A final decision is expected later this month. If you’re a resident in the area get in touch with us on hello@lovinmalta.com•
