Lalitpur jail superintendent suspended over ‘special treatment’ to former SP MP Rizwan Zaheer

Zaheer, a two-time MP and three-time MLA, has been lodged in jail since January, 2022 in connection with a murder case. He was transferred to Lalitpur from Balrampur on administrative grounds.The matter surfaced during a surprise inspection conducted by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) team at the Lalitpur jail on Sunday, said a government official.A senior official said the suspension of superintendent Mukesh Kumar was implemented on the basis of a recommendation from the department. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against him.This is the fourth suspension in the case — earlier, a deputy jailor and two jail warders were also suspended.According to the prison official, during the surprise inspection, the team reportedly found a mattress, pillow, battery-operated fan, desi ghee pickle, tiffin box, oil, soap, shampoo, cream, and Rs 7,500 in cash from the barrack where Rizwan Zaheer was lodged.The prison department ordered an inquiry and action was taken based on its findings.Zaheer was arrested in January 2022 in connection with the murder of local SP leader Firoz Ahmed alias Pappu.Story continues below this adAccording to police, the murder was a fallout of a rivalry rooted in political ambition and dominance, as Firoz was preparing to contest the election from the Tulsipur seat while Zaheer was vying for the party ticket for his daughter Zeba Rizwan.Police also arrested five others in the case, including Zaheer’s daughter and son-in-law.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:UP Police
