On May 29, 2025, intense overnight rainfall triggered one of the most catastrophic flash floods in Nigeria’s recent history, devastating Mokwa in Niger State. The flood quickly overwhelmed local infrastructures. The situation worsened when the railway embankment holding back the waters of River Dingi collapsed. This breach destroyed 265 informal settlements. The flood claimed at least 161 lives, including several children, while local authorities and community volunteers continued search and rescue operations for those still missing in submerged areas like Kudu and Rabba. The disaster displaced over 3,018 people. Assessment reports confirmed that at least 265 households were directly affected, with many families losing their homes, livestock, food supplies, and farmlands. Among the displaced are hundreds of children, many now sheltering with friends and relatives in nearby communities.Urgent humanitarian needs include access to safe drinking water, as floodwaters contaminated existing boreholes. Widespread open defecation has raised serious concerns about potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Affected populations also require emergency food assistance and psychosocial support, particularly for children and families heavily impacted by the disaster.Additionally, the flood affected and damaged three primary schools—Tsanwa Primary School, Kudu LEA, and Rabba Primary School—disrupting education for over 1,200 school-aged children. In addition, 940 children enrolled in Islamic schools in the area remain unaccounted.
