Dili: Timor-Leste, situated in the high-risk Ring of Fire, is highly vulnerable to major disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods. Strengthening emergency logistics and fostering collaboration among stakeholders is crucial to mitigating the impact of these calamities. To address this, the Civil Protection Authority, with support from the World Food Programme (WFP), held the Humanitarian Logistics Preparedness Inception Workshop and officially launched the Field Based Preparedness Project in Dili. The workshop aims to enhance disaster management by introducing government policies and approaches, providing updates on recent structural changes, and exploring global developments in logistics preparedness to strengthen national readiness. “This inception workshop underscores the importance of preparedness for the efficiency and effectiveness of humanitarian programmes. A coordinated effort is critical to ensuring high-quality responses, as preparedness enables us, as emergency responders, to positively influence the outcomes of future responses,” said Domingos Mariano Reis, Secretary of State for Civil Protection, during the event’s opening. The two-day workshop, directed at key stakeholders, including Government responders, the UN, NGOs and the private sector, also seeks to foster collaboration through discussions, knowledge sharing, and the establishment of a nationally led Logistics Coordination Mechanism to improve humanitarian logistics. “The Civil Protection Authority and WFP are working together to lay the groundwork for a robust and functional logistics system capable of effectively responding to disasters. Collaborative efforts with stakeholders offer greater opportunities to save lives through data-driven, timely, and efficient logistics, reliable coordination, and effective information management,” noted Amin Said, WFP Officer-in-Charge.This initiative is supported by the global WFP-led Logistics Cluster Team and funded by the USAID Bureau of Humanitarian AMairs, the Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, and the German Federal Foreign OMice.
