We have a primer on everything you need to know. Sales are accurate at the time of publication, but prices and inventory are always subject to change.Last year, the Kindle Paperwhite received a long overdue update, increasing the screen size and boosting the e-reader's speed. The new 7-inch screen is slightly larger than the previous model, but the new processor makes the 12th generation Paperwhite quite fast. This new device also features a better display, with a softer white background and less of a blue tint. That makes for both an improved contrast ratio, as well as a much better reading experience. For Prime Day, we’re seeing the biggest discount for the Kindle Paperwhite yet. You can get the model with lock screen ads for $124.99 (previous low was $129.99), down from the sticker price of $159.99. The ad-free model (the one you should get) will cost you $144.99, down from its list price of $179.99. But if you’re using an older Kindle, or if you’re planning to buy your first Kindle ever, this is the right time, and this is the right model. The Paperwhite features a 300 ppi (pixels per inch) display with 16 levels of background lighting, and optional warm lighting as well.I started reading e-books back in 2010 with the very first generation of Nook e-readers, and as someone who has used Kindle Paperwhite models for more than six years, I can confidently say that the Paperwhite is the one to get. The base Kindle is good too (also featuring a smaller 300 ppi display), but it's not nearly as fast or as sharp as the Paperwhite.PCMag agrees with me. In their review, they awarded the 12th Gen Kindle Paperwhite an outstanding rating of 4.5 stars, and an Editor’s Choice award. The review notes that “Amazon’s 2024 Kindle Paperwhite improves upon the success of its predecessor by increasing the screen size and boosting speed,” and that “the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite gives you most of what the Kindle line has to offer at the best price, making it the model we recommend to most people and our Editors' Choice winner.”The other Kindles on saleAs you’d expect from Prime Day, all major Kindle models are on sale. In case you’re looking for something more than the Paperwhite, consider the Paperwhite Signature Edition that comes with 32GB storage, more color options, auto-adjusting light sensors, and wireless charging support. The Signature edition is discounted from $199.99 to $149.99.If you must have color on your Kindle, take a look at the Kindle Colorsoft, which is down from $279.99 all the way to $179.99, the biggest savings yet. That said, based on Lifehacker associate tech editor Michelle Ehrhardt's review, the Kindle Colorsoft doesn’t live up to the hype, as “the technology still comes with too many drawbacks to please most people.”The base Kindle is discounted too. You can get the ad-supported model for just $84.99 (down from $109.99), and the ad-free model for $104.99 (down from $129.99).Looking for something else?
