Bank of Uganda Governor, Dr Michael Atingi-Ego (Left) and Bank Managing Director, Baroda Shashi Dhar (Right), planting a tree in Jubiya forest reserve in Masaka.Bank of Baroda (Uganda) Limited has partnered with National Forest Authority (NFA) to restore 20 hectares of Jubiya central forest reserve in Masaka district.The partnership focuses on the project of reforestation, afforestation and restoration of landscapes in the part of the Forest Reserve which is located in Masaka district.The Bank of Uganda Governor, Dr Michael Atingi-Ego, who was the chief guest during the tree planting campaign recently, said that tree planting is more than symbolic.“It is a meaningful contribution to the preservation of our natural heritage and a clear demonstration of your alignment with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Bank of Baroda’s approach to ESG is comprehensive and impactful,” said Dr Atingi-Ego, adding: “…from distributing solar lamps to communities, gifting plants to staff and even embedding sustainability into your corporate identity — these initiatives reflect a deep-rooted commitment to environmental responsibility.”He said that the restoration of 20 hectares through the planting of over 12,000 indigenous trees —funded by the Bank of Baroda— is a powerful act of corporate responsibility.Speaking at the same event, Shashi Dhar, Managing Director of Bank of Baroda, said: “Today marks a significant step in our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable community development, as a bank in partnership with the NFA, undertakes the restoration of 20 hectares of the Jubiya Central Forest Reserve.”He said forests are the lungs of our environment.“They are vital for climate balance, water security, and biodiversity. By restoring degraded forest land, we are investing in the future—a future rooted in conservation, resilience, and regeneration,” said Dhar.In addition to the forest restoration efforts, the bank announced the distribution of solar lights to members of the surrounding communities.“These efforts, along with our ongoing environmental restoration initiative in partnership with the National Forestry Authority (NFA)—including the restoration of 20 hectares of forest in the Jubiya Central Forest Reserve and the distribution of solar lights—underscore the Bank’s unwavering commitment to making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of Ugandans,” he said.The bank’s Board Chairperson, Dr. Rebecca Isabella Kiconco she said that the bank allocated 55.8m to restore the 20 hectares of Jubiya forest.“Protecting Forests is not the job of government alone, but a shared responsibility of every citizen.
