Man, family attacked with knives in Mysuru in suspected retaliation over 2023 Pocso case

The incident took place when the two families were returning from a police station after a failed bid at arriving at a compromise in connection with the case.A 38-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in 2023, and his family members, were attacked on the streets of Mysuru on Thursday night by the family of the victim, according to sources.The attack occurred on Ramanuja Road, under the jurisdiction of K R police station, and was captured on CCTV cameras and mobile phone cameras. The viral videos purportedly show a black car forcing an autorickshaw to come to a halt, after which several people alight from the car and attack the people in the autorickshaw with knives.The four people who suffered injuries in the attack have been identified as Rajanna D alias Raju, his wife Kumuda, and their relatives, Vishalakshi and Renukamma. Rajanna, who is reported to have suffered serious injuries, is an accused in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act case for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in 2023. The Mysuru City police identified the attackers as the father and mother of the victim and two close relatives.The incident took place when the two families were returning from a police station after a failed bid at arriving at a compromise in connection with the case.Incidentally, a hearing in the trial was also held in a special court in Mysuru on Thursday, where the statements of two witnesses were to be recorded, but the process was adjourned for a date in August.The Mysuru police, who have identified the attackers on the basis of statements given by the victims, have started a search to find the suspects and arrest them, a police official said. The police suspect the attack is a result of disputes over settling the ongoing Pocso case.The Pocso case against Rajanna was registered in November 2023 after a 17-year-old girl was reported missing by her mother. The accused is alleged to have gained the confidence of the girl and started a relationship with her after her parents had entrusted him with the alleged task of breaking up a prior relationship she had.Story continues below this adWhile the girl’s parents had initially registered a kidnapping case in November 2023 after she went missing, a Pocso case was taken up after she was found in the company of the accused.
