Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), which is now making waves at the global box office, may have solved a huge Jurassic mystery. The Jurassic Park franchise is full of mysteries. For starters, what’s going on with the bizarrely constructed T-Rex paddock in the original 1993 film? What dinosaur killed the crew on the S.S. Venture in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)? And what dinosaur ate those poor sailors aboard the much smaller boat during the opening sequence in Jurassic Park III (2001)? The latter is perhaps one of the most frustrating mysteries of all.In Jurassic Park III, Eric Kirby (Trevor Morgan) and his stepfather Ben Hildebrand (Mark Harelik) are parasailing near InGen’s second dinosaur-inhabited island, Isla Sorna AKA Site B (now a no-fly zone), tethered to a small boat that’s bouncing along the coastal waters.Credit: Universal PicturesBut when the pair enters a thick cloud, they lose sight of the boat, and some sudden tugging of their line suggests something bad is happening down below. Soon, Eric and Ben look down in horror as the crew is gone, with nothing but streaks of blood smeared all over the deck. Now, with no one onboard, the boat is speeding towards some rocks. So Eric and Ben have no other choice but to detach their line and fly towards the jungles of Site B. While there are all sorts of deadly dinosaurs roaming the jungles of Sorna, these off-screen deaths have left fans scratching their heads for 24 years, largely because they take place out on the coast as opposed to on the island itself. So, what exactly killed those men?Credit: Universal PicturesRelated: ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Brings Back “Talking Raptor” From ‘Jurassic Park III’What Killed the Men on the Boat in Jurassic Park III?There are many things in Jurassic Park III that make little to no sense, from the fact that the jungles of Isla Sorna look completely different than they do in The Lost World, to the inconsistency regarding the Pteranodons, which are inadvertently released by the characters from captivity in this film despite already appearing to be free at the end of the 1997 sequel. But the boat mystery is by far the biggest. Still, it hasn’t stopped fans from theorizing about which dinosaur ate the sailors. One theory is that the Pteranodons did it, but this makes no sense considering they aren’t released from the Aviary until later on in the 2001 film. The most popular theory is the Spinosaurus, Jurassic Park III‘s main prehistoric antagonist.Credit: Universal PicturesThroughout the 2001 sequel, the Spinosaurus, AKA the Spino, is indeed shown to be an incredibly powerful swimmer — it attacks Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Paul Kirby (William H. Macy), Amanda Kirby (Téa Leoni), and Eric on the Site B river. And there’s nothing to suggest that the super-sized apex predator doesn’t frequent the ocean from time to time to hunt its prey.Still, this has never been confirmed. But the real answer is that there probably isn’t one. What isn’t a mystery is the fact that Jurassic Park III, directed by Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Captain America: The First Avenger) faced a troubled production, with the script undergoing many rewrites even while cameras were rolling and sets had already been built.Nevertheless, many sequences from rejected drafts made it into the film as a way of salvaging some of the work. This might explain why there’s no dinosaur present during the boat sequence. On the other hand, it’s possible the filmmakers wanted to retain some mystery. Either way, we may finally have an answer as to which dinosaur ate those sailors.Credit: Universal PicturesJurassic World Rebirth Solves Jurassic Park III‘s Biggest MysteryJurassic World Rebirth, the seventh entry in the long-running Jurassic series, has officially stomped into theaters worldwide. Directed by Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), with a screenplay by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park), Rebirth marks the beginning of “a new Jurassic era.”Starring Scarlett Johansson in the main role, the film follows highly skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett as she leads a top-secret mission to an abandoned InGen island in South America, where they must retrieve life-saving genetic material from three of the biggest dinosaurs ever across land, sea, and air: Titanosaurus, Mosasaurus, and Quetzalcoatlus.A key sequence from the film involves Zora and her team, along with a civilian family, stranded on a boat on the new island’s coast, where they’re surrounded by a pack of Spinosaurs that have teamed up with a Mosasaur. Some fans are thrilled that the Spino is finally back, however, others aren’t happy with the creature’s more “paleo-accurate” design.Credit: Universal PicturesEither way, this thrilling sequence (one of many in the new film) strongly implies that the dinosaur that kills the men on the boat in Jurassic Park III is indeed the Spinosaurus. While the version of the animal from the third film and the new ones look very different, we already know that the Spino is a confident swimmer that preys on riverboats in Jurassic — and now we know for certain that it’s not shy about venturing out into the ocean, either. But did it also have help from the Mosasaurus in Jurassic Park III? While the ocean-dwelling leviathan wasn’t introduced to the franchise until Jurassic World (2015), Rebirth also suggests that there have always been Mosasaurus in the ocean, with this new island being an abandoned InGen facility that predates the original Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar.Watch the trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth below:When Can I Watch Jurassic World Rebirth?Jurassic World Rebirth is out in theaters now.It stars Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Mahershala Ali (The Green Book), Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (Dead Boy Detectives), Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs Lopez), Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool). What do you think killed the men on the boat in Jurassic Park III?
