To say that Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), the seventh film in the long-running franchise, has received mixed to negative reviews from audiences and critics since its release on July 2 is an understatement. It is without question the most divisive Jurassic film to date.Directed by Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla) with a screenplay by David Koepp, who worked on Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Rebirth promises to return to the 1993 film by Steven Spielberg in terms of horror and suspense.Starring Scarlett Johansson as covert ops expert Zora Bennett, alongside Jonathan Bailey’s paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, it follows a group of experts on a mission to retrieve life-changing DNA from giant dinosaurs on a third InGen island. But when they become shipwrecked, they encounter deadly prehistoric creatures and horrifying genetic mutations.Credit: Universal PicturesIs Jurassic World Rebirth Any Good? While Rebirth certainly offers plenty of surface-level entertainment, those expecting anything that even remotely resembles the original will be disappointed. As for all those promises from the cast and crew that it has the same tone as the 1993 film, you were lied to.Rebirth opens with a Snickers bar wrapper that gets sucked into an air vent a’ la Final Destination and creates havoc in an InGen facility, forcing all to evacuate and let a giant mutant dino take over. This alone should give you an idea of the kind of movie you’re in for.Meanwhile, dinosaurs have been dying out all over the world as “the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable” to them (even though they did perfectly fine for several years).Credit: Universal PicturesWe’re also told that people have grown “bored of dinosaurs”, which is absurd when you consider how humans are still fascinated by modern-day animals and frequent zoos to see them all year round. Are you telling us we’d be bored of actual dinosaurs after a few years?Dr. Henry Loomis, who works at the Natural History Museum in New York City, complains that no-one is buying tickets to see the exhibitions anymore when there’s a huge sauropod outside on the streets. Why isn’t he out there studying the animal instead of sitting indoors?Character development is about as existent as logic, save for one painfully out-of-place scene in which Zora Bennett (Johansson) and her ops co-worker Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) exchange a few random, cringeworthy lines about how they’ve each lost someone, although these so-called backstories are never mentioned again throughout the remainder of the film.Credit: Universal PicturesThere are a few positives, though. The dinosaurs look spectacular and the action sequences are thrilling, even if there are zero stakes. As for the mutants, they only get a few minutes’ worth of screentime. The Distortus Rex appears briefly at the beginning and the end despite being a huge part of the marketing.Rebirth is a bad film that can’t justify its own existence. The characters are two-dimensional (that’s a compliment), the plot is wafer-thin, and the retconning of the events of the last film, Jurassic World Dominion (2022)–which saw dinosaurs thriving all over the world, a concept that paved the way for countless new stories–is nothing short of unforgivable.Credit: Inside the MagicRelated: Three New ‘Jurassic World’ Sequels in Development as ‘Rebirth’ Roars at the Box OfficeRebirth Box Office PerformanceWith all that said, Jurassic World Rebirth is killing it at the box office. Per Wikipedia, as at June 9, the film has grossed $334.3 million worldwide against its $180 million budget, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2025. Given its trajectory, it’s currently on track to reach the $1 billion mark, which all three previous Jurassic World movies achieved. So, if you’re a fan of the latest film, you’ll be thrilled to know that this sort of box office performance means that Universal Pictures will undoubtedly greenlight a sequel quickly. If, however, you’re among those who think the film is an even bigger abomination than the Distortus Rex itself, and that this series is best left deep in the dirt with all the dinosaur bones, you’ll be very disappointed to learn that this is not the end of the Jurassic franchise.Credit: Universal PicturesJurassic World Rebirth is out in theaters now.It stars Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Mahershala Ali (The Green Book), Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (Dead Boy Detectives), Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs Lopez), Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool). What did you think of Rebirth?
