Usain Bolt was left furious after a controversial refereeing mistake at the Nitro Athletics Series in 2017.The Olympic legend is known for his playful personality both on and off the track but his angry reaction in Melbourne left fans stunned.Usain Bolt appeared at the 2017 Nitro Athletics Series but was left far from happy at how the evening unfoldedGettyBut the legend would not leave empty-handedGettyDuring the 4×100 metres mixed relay event, hosts Australia were disqualified for an illegal baton exchange. As a result, Bolt’s ‘All-Stars’ team comfortably romped home to victory but the controversy was just beginning.Australia were subsequently awarded points in error despite being disqualified which saw them claim top spot in the table ahead of the Jamaican team. The mistake was later corrected to hand Bolt and co the overall victory but not until after the live broadcast of the event had finished and the majority of spectators – including IAAF President Sebastian Coe – had left the stadium. But it was too late as a furious Bolt let rip at trackside officials.“(It’s) because it’s Australia. It’s biased!” Bolt screamed at officials before the result was corrected. “I’m going to protest that – it makes no sense.“I don’t know what happened. I thought if you were DQ’d you’d be out (of the race) for sure or even lose some points but you can’t not lose any points.”Event organisers later claimed the error laid with an Australian referee.Bolt scooped a whopping seven-figure fee to appear at all three meetings of the Nitro Series in Melbourne as well as receiving a stake in the company running the event. The eight-time Olympic gold medallist showed that even in his farewell season he was still a box office attraction.Bolt ran the second leg of the mixed relay as Jamaica romped to victory in MelbourneGettyHe ran only in the relays during the opening two nights of the series and admitted he was far from his peak condition.“I’m not in the best of shape, but the more I run the better I feel,” Bolt said.“For me I’m just taking it a month at a time, trying to enjoy that it’s my last season. I’m not trying to overthink anything or trying to stress myself.”Bolt waved a tearful good bye to athletics in August 2017 at the World Championships in London. He completed a lap of honour after his final race at the London Stadium whilst taking in a rapturous ovation from those in attendance.“It’s really sad that I have to walk away now,” said the Jamaican. “I was saying goodbye to the fans and saying goodbye to my events also.”Bolt called time on his career after the World Championships in London in 2017GettyAsked if he would consider a return to the track down the line, he replied: “I’ve seen too many people retire and come back just to make it worse or to shame themselves.“I won’t be one of those people.”
