Nigeria has rolled out its first fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles for the armed forces, according to local media. The fleet, comprising 20 buses, 50 pickup vans, and 14 executive transport units, was commissioned at the Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja as part of the government’s broader clean energy strategy under President Bola Tinubu. With lower tailpipe emissions than gasoline, CNG delivers fuel efficiency comparable to that of conventional engines and is suitable for all vehicle classes, from light to heavy-duty.It is produced by compressing natural gas to a fraction of its original volume.Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, stated that the initiative aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, cut carbon emissions, and support Nigeria’s climate commitments. He also highlighted the potential for long-term cost savings and operational efficiency, describing the move as a step toward transforming the armed forces into a model of innovation and sustainability. To support the shift, Matawalle stressed the importance of building technical expertise among military personnel and establishing CNG refueling stations at key military installations.Growing InstabilityNigeria has been enhancing its military assets due to growing instability. The country continues to face escalating violence from both jihadist groups and armed criminal gangs.Earlier this month, fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province killed at least 11 people in an attack on an internally displaced people camp in Malam Fatori, near the border with Niger. In June, criminal gangs ambushed a military base in central Nigeria, killing at least 20 soldiers. The post Nigeria Unveils First Compressed Natural Gas‑Powered Vehicles appeared first on The Defense Post.
