It’s day two of Newmarket’s July meeting and it’s the fillies who take centre stage as far as the Group action is concerned. The Group 1 Falmouth Stakes sees a clash of generations, with the first two home in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, Crimson Advocate and Cinderella’s Dream, attempting to concede 9lb in weight for age to Aidan O’Brien’s Coronation Stakes third January. There’s also a star two-year-old in action with Venetian Sun, so impressive when taking the Albany at Royal Ascot last time and talked about in glowing terms by trainer Karl Burke, but she looks set to be a very short price when bidding to follow up in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes. There’s a good mix of handicaps, too, and here are our three best bets on the card.talkSPORT BET welcome offer – Bet £10 Get £30 in free betsNewmarket July meeting betting tips1.50 Urban Glimpse – 5/2 3.35 Crimson Advocate – 7/24.45 Dorney Lake – 13/21.50 Urban GlimpseHorses with good form in handicap company tend to win this with regularity so it’s a little bit surprising to see Charlie Appleby’s King’s Charter, who has yet to run in one and has been handed top weight, as the early favourite with the bookmakers.Much preferred is Urban Glimpse, who has yet to win this season but has been an excellent second both times he has run.In the first of those he was behind Sing Us A Song, who was a huge gamble next time at Royal Ascot but missed the break and failed to fire afterwards. There’s no reason to doubt the form, though, as the third, fifth, sixth and seventh have all won races since.Next time he went down by just half a length at York to Dante’s Lad, who won again next time, while the fourth and sixth also scored. 3.35 Crimson AdvocateThe bookmakers make this a three-runner heat between Cinderella’s Dream, January and Crimson Advocate, and it’s a little bit surprising that the latter is the biggest price of the trio. It’s true she was receiving 3lb from Cinderella’s Dream when beating her by a length and three-quarters at Ascot, but she came from even further behind the runner-up off what was a very slow gallop and won going away.A Group 2 winner over 5f as a juvenile, Crimson Advocate showed that speed to devastating effect then, and she can do so again in a race that lacks any obvious pace. The support for January is understandable given she’s trained by Aidan O’Brien, but her Coronation Stakes third came in a weak renewal lacking either the British or Irish 1,000 Guineas winner and she still has a fair bit to find despite the 9lb weight allowance.4.45 – Dorney LakeThis is one of the lesser races on the card, but it might provide the best bet.Dorney Lake had been progressive over 6f earlier in the season, winning at Yarmouth and Doncaster, and after losing his way a little in May, he was back on track with a fine fourth on his first run over 7f at Newbury. He’d always been a strong finisher at 6f, so another furlong was well worth a try, and he got it well enough despite pulling very hard in a race that was steadily run and dominated by the front-running winner. He gets a hood in a bid to help him settle this time, but there should be more pace on this time and he can come home fast and late.talkSPORT BET welcome offer – Bet £10 Get £30 in free betsVisit talkSPORT BET for all the latest horse racing betting odds*all odds correct at time of writing and subject to change*18+ New customers only.
