Shedeur Sanders is set to engage in an intense quarterback battle when he arrives for Cleveland Browns training camp. The NFL rookie, who made headlines earlier this year with a shocking slide in the 2025 draft, will challenge the likes of Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel for a spot on the roster.Sanders will be hoping to start for the Browns during his rookie yearGettyPlenty of noise has surrounded the 23-year-old signal caller, with a number of insiders and analysts suggesting he has the talent and star power to win the starting role next season. While Flacco is the presumed Week 1 starter, Sanders could indeed wrestle that role away from his teammate.Despite a stellar college resume, the young QB sat and watched through five rounds of the draft, until the Browns finally took him with the 144th overall pick. That was quite a surprise, as coming into the event, he was widely expected to be a first-round selection. After all, Sanders threw for an impressive 14,327 yards and 134 touchdowns in his college career, which was spent with Jackson State and the Colorado Buffaloes. In his senior year, under the watchful eye of father and coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur racked up 4,134 yards and 37 TDs as he led his team to a 9-4 finish and an Alamo Bowl appearance. But while Sanders caught the eye week in, week out in college, it wasn’t all plain sailing.Last November, he made headlines for the wrong reasons.During a game against Kansas, Sanders shoved a referee after taking a sack on third down.Colorado were trailing by nine in the third quarter and the young QB was clearly frustrated as two Jayhawks defenders climbed over him.Sanders was frustrated after taking a sack against KansasCFB on FOXThe QB appeared to shove an official in the melee that followedCFB on FoxAnother ref was seen pushing Sanders back after the incidentCFB on FoxAs Sanders got to his feet, he appeared to shove official Kevin Mar as a small scuffle broke out.Fox rules analyst Mike Pereira suggested at the time the he was ‘lucky’ to avoid an ejection.“There’s no question that he does,” Pereira said when asked about Sanders shoving Mar.“Look, I get why he’s upset because people are almost climbing over him after he was down, but, you know, the officials can use their hands all they want to try to keep order.“But you cannot come back as a player and push an official.“In the chaos, the officials don’t see it, but he’s lucky that he wasn’t ejected from the game.”Sanders was ‘lucky’ not to be ejected from the game after his shoveGettySanders finished 23 of 29 for 266 yards and three touchdowns during Colorado’s 37-21 loss at Arrowhead that afternoon. While he wasn’t penalized for the shove, his frustrations had boiled over, as the game — in which the Buffaloes’ playoff hopes were on the line — featured plenty of physical hits.Sanders was perhaps fortunate to avoid an injury from a scary hit during the loss, too.In the first half, Kansas defensive end Dean Miller appeared to lower his head and fling himself toward Shedeur’s knees while he attempted a pass on the run. “I mean, I just don’t know how that’s legal overall,” Sanders told reporters after the game when asked about the shot.“I ain’t understand that, but, you know, it is what it is. There was a couple plays like that.”While Sanders often cut a calm figure on the field during his college career, last November’s game against Kansas proved that even the most assured NCAA quarterbacks can feel the heat from time to time. That kind of pressure will no doubt be cranked up in the NFL, meaning the rookie will have to learn how to keep his cool as quickly as possible.NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more
