Scottie Scheffler is bidding to join Tiger Woods as the only man ever to win the Memorial Tournament three times in a row.$20 million is up for grabs at Muirfield Village Golf Club and there will be plenty of players ready to ruin the American’s weekend.Jack Nicklaus designed and founded Muirfield Village Golf ClubGettyNone more so than Rory McIlroy, who comes in determined and rested after taking a couple of weeks off.The Northern Irishman has never won the tournament in 13 attempts, and is hoping for a poetic triumph as Jack Nicklaus presents the 50th edition.“Obviously, Jack being the host and everything else that comes along with this tournament, the golf course, the wonderful work they do for the local community here as well,” he said. “It’s a wonderful tournament. “Obviously a great list of champions on a wonderful golf course. I haven’t quite figured it out yet. It’s frustrated me over my career. But hopefully this is the week that I put it all together.”McIlroy has completed a career Grand Slam but admits there are still a couple of gaps in his CV which he is eager to plug.“Yeah, I would say here and Tiger’s event at Riviera, they’re the two that I would love to win,” he said. “I’ve been lucky enough to win at Bay Hill, but not while Arnold was alive. So I always thought it would be cool to win here and take that little walk up the hill off the 18th green and shake Jack’s hand. “Also, Jack and I share a nice history. We’ve known each other now for nearly 20 years — or I’ve known him for nearly 20 years. He’s been nothing but great to me and my family. So, yeah, this is certainly one I would love to get done.”The great puts his struggles down to the cleverly designed course, which forces him to leave his big stick in his bag.“For being such a long golf course I feel like it takes driver out of my hand a lot, which, you know, I pride myself on that being one of my biggest weapons,” he explained. “The fairways pinch in right around the spots where I would be finishing driver. “So it’s frustrated me in a way that I feel like my biggest weapon is in some way neutralized here.McIlroy admits the course doesn’t play to his strengthsGetty“And then I have to play the golf course like most of the other guys in the field, which I think I can — everyone plays from the same spots. “It’s more that there’s bunkers that I think I can carry that I could get an advantage, but there’s really no advantage to it because, obviously, the rough here is so penal, and then angles into greens. “And so it’s just about me being a little more disciplined and not being so aggressive with my strategy.”Scottie Scheffler bidding for history at MuirfieldScheffler insists that winning twice in a row doesn’t give him any extra strokes when he gets underway. He said: “Yeah, I mean, the last two years don’t mean much when you stand on the first tee, but this is a golf course I’ve had some success at and this will be a cool place to be able to accomplish something like winning the same tournament three years in a row, especially with it being Jack’s Place, and I’m looking forward to getting out there this week.“The golf course is already firming up pretty good. It doesn’t look like we have much rain in the forecast, so it should be another pretty challenging week here at Muirfield.”Scheffler loves the challenge in ScotlandGettyLike McIlroy, the world No. 1 is looking forward to testing himself against a legendary course.“I think a test like this — this golf course specifically is a place you can come out, and even if the greens aren’t that fast and there’s not a ton of wind, it will still be challenging because there’s so many areas where you just can’t really miss,” he added.“The greens have a lot of pitch. There’s certain holes where you just have to step up and hit really great golf shots.“You think of holes like 12 where there’s really no bailout, 14 there’s really no bailout, 3 there’s not really a bailout to a lot of pin locations. You got to step up there and hit really, really good golf shots. I think golf courses can challenge you in different ways and some of ’em are really good ways to challenge, some of ’em I wouldn’t want to see every week. “This is one where I think when you’re testing the ball striking that you do out here, it’s just really challenging. And I think if you hit great shots, you get rewarded for it, and if you start hitting poor shots, you’re going to be punished pretty severely, especially when you look at some of the shorter holes out here like 3 and 14.”Stay up to date on all things golf across our talkSPORT platforms – subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest news, opinion, exclusive interviews and ourdaily unfiltered, unscripted show ‘The S* Word, from 8am ET.
