Holly Holm plans to hang her gloves up by the end of 2026.And the women’s fighting legend doesn’t believe a rematch against rival Ronda Rousey is on the cards before she retires.Holm returned to the ring last Saturday for just her third boxing fight in 13 years – suffering a points defeat to Stephanie HanGettyAhead of her controversial WBA lightweight title points defeat to Stephanie Han this past weekend, Holm explained that she would be open to rematching Rousey any time.Holm famously knocked out Rousey in one of the highest attended UFC fights of all time, winning her first title in Dana White‘s promotion by flattening ‘Rowdy’ with a vicious head kick.A rematch between the former UFC champions has been repeatedly discussed since the 2015 clash, especially as Rousey returned to MMA last month with a swift submission win over Gina Carano on Netflix.Despite Rousey confirming her comeback against Carano is a one-and-done, she made the headlines in May by asserting she would ‘clean her clock’ when discussing a second fight with Holm.Well, speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show Wednesday, Holm had the chance to respond to Rousey’s comments when talking about the conclusion of her own career.Holm: Rousey is a threat, but doesn’t want rematch“You can say one thing and actions are another; she’s always going to be that type of person,” Holm said.“I’ve always said I’ll rematch her. That’s the bottom line. [But] she doesn’t want it, she’s never wanted it, and that’s alright.“She does have a big name, and that would be the big fight [I could retire after]; you would need me to have a fight like that.“But I don’t think she really wants to, and I’m not even mad at her for it.“I don’t want someone to get in there and fight if they don’t actually want to fight.Holm’s KO of Rousey in Australia 11 years ago remains one of the biggest upsets in MMA historyGettyRousey scored a trademark win when she faced Carano, stopping her fellow American in 17 seconds – but she has said she will never fight againGetty“Because I want someone who wants it. I feel like it’s just one of the things a lot of people ask about.“[The rematch has never not happened] because I said no. I 100 per cent always said, ‘If she wants the rematch, I’ll give it to her.’“She’s still a threat with what she’s good at, she just has holes [elsewhere].”On her retirement plans, Holm added: “If I’m being really honest, I just want big fights.“I’m not saying that all of them have to be title fights, but definitely a couple within the year, and then I’m done.“That’s where I’m at, whether it be MMA or boxing, yeah [probably one or two more fights maximum]…Holm admitted she realistically only has one or two more fights in her – but it’s not going to be against RouseyGetty“I would say within the year, I’ll be done.”Holm admitted she would announce a future fight as her last, ‘depending on the opponent.’The 44-year-old firmly believes she won her bout against Han in El Paso, Texas, despite judges awarding the latter a majority decision.Han vs Holm 2 headlined Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian’s Most Valuable Promotions’ (MVP) latest boxing event.MVP also put on Rousey’s comeback against Carano in May, meaning a blockbuster rematch against Holm would seemingly be easy to put together. However, Rousey has been adamant that she will not entertain a second MMA fight and is now happily retired. “I definitely have the ability and the opportunity to be able to clean her clock and rewrite all of that, but it’s no longer important to me anymore,” Rousey said of fighting Holm again.Only time will tell what Holm will decide to do next, but there’s definitely a route for her to get back to MMA through MVP.Holm started her combat sports career in the early 2000s in the sweet science before transitioning to MMA.The American made her UFC debut in February 2015 and became the women’s bantamweight champion nine months later by defeating Rousey.‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ contested her final UFC fight in April 2024 against current champion Kayla Harrison. She returned to boxing in 2025, defeating Yolanda Vega via unanimous decision before suffering back-to-back defeats to Han.
