The Labour Party has accused PN Leader Alex Borg of misleading the public about Malta’s national debt during the election campaign. In a statement issued today, the party said figures published by the National Statistics Office contradicted Borg’s claims that government debt had increased by €1 billion in a single month.PL argued that the figures cited by Borg during a political activity in Naxxar referred to non-consolidated debt statistics from the European Central Bank and not the official Eurostat definition used for national debt reporting. The party also accused Borg of attempting to undermine the NSO by suggesting the institution was manipulated by government.According to the Labour Party, the newly published NSO statement showed that the Consolidated Fund deficit for April was significantly lower than the same month last year. The statement also referenced reports by Politico and the Financial Times claiming Malta is expected to become the only country to exit the EU’s Excessive Deficit Procedure ahead of schedule.Labour called on Borg to apologise for what it described as false claims and attacks on public institutions. What do you make of Labour’s claims?•
