‘Star Wars’ Duo Could Get Their Own Film Trilogy Despite an Underappreciated Start

Wait 5 sec.

One of the most iconic Star Wars duos has finally been given the big-screen treatment. The Mandalorian & Grogu was released in theaters worldwide on May 22, marking the first time a Star Wars television series has been adapted into a feature-length movie. Its journey to theaters wasn’t smooth-sailing, though. Not only is the film adapted from a series whose last season premiered three years ago to mixed reviews, but it also arrives at a time when the once-untouchable Star Wars brand is seemingly in a state of disengagement.Credit: LucasfilmWhy Is Star Wars in Such a Bad Place? This follows years of disappointing content from Disney, which began with Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi (2017) and continued through Disney+ series such as The Book of Boba Fett (2021), Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), Ahsoka (2023), and The Acolyte (2024).But perhaps the biggest problem with The Mandalorian & Grogu is its lack of ambition.Since the first trailer premiered last year, fans have been critical of the fact that it lacks the big-screen makeover TV properties get when transitioning to theaters. In short, it looks like a few episodes of the series stitched together. And now that it’s out, this is one of many criticisms it’s facing, with others pointing to the underwhelming and inconsequential plot.Credit: LucasfilmThe Mandalorian & Grogu Is StrugglingMore importantly, the film is also proving to be a commercial disappointment for Disney and Lucasfilm, which comes as no surprise given the box-office tracking.According to Variety, The Mandalorian and Grogu has seen a 70% drop at the box office in its second weekend. The film has “suffered a catastrophic 70% drop in its second weekend, signaling the property isn’t catering beyond an aging group of core fans,” the outlet writes. So far, since its May 22 release, the film has grossed $137.4 million domestically and $249.1 million globally, against a budget of $165 million.Credit: LucasfilmA New Star Wars Duo Could Replace Din and GroguWhether Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu will have a worthy comeback on Disney+ remains to be seen, but if they can’t win fans over in theaters, that’s very unlikely to happen.Maybe it’s time for another duo to take over. Of course, Din and Grogu aren’t the only pairing in Star Wars. There’s Han Solo and Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, to name but a few examples. However, there are also those of the much lesser known kind, such as Lop and her companion droid TD-4, who hail from the anime anthology series, Star Wars: Visions.Credit: LucasfilmRelated: Disney ‘Star Wars’ Abandons Beloved Female Jedi, Not Expected To Return in Future Projects“Lop and Ochō” is a tragic story that centers on a family being divided during the reign of the Empire, with one daughter, Lop, devoting herself to the ways of the Force, and her adopted sister, Ochō, turning toward the dark side. However, despite ending on a cliffhanger, the widely praised episode has yet to be followed up in any form. Volume 3 featured sequels to other Volume 1 episodes — “The Duel,” “The Village Bride,” and “The Ninth Jedi” — but a second “Lop and Ochō” was sadly missing.Credit: LucasfilmThey Could Return in Volume 4Star Wars: Visions launched on Disney+ in 2021. All three volumes, which consist of standalone episodes, have received critical acclaim and are widely considered to be some of the best Star Wars stories, despite none of them being canon with the rest of the franchise. Now, a fourth volume is rumored to be in the works. Earlier this year, an unverified scoop from Daniel Richtman (via The Direct) claimed that Lucasfilm is developing Volume 4.So far, there’s been no confirmation from Lucasfilm that Volume 4 is happening, and as such, there are no episode listings. If it happens, hopefully we’ll get a “Lop and Ochō” sequel.Credit: LucasfilmThe story of Lop and Ochō certainly feels worthy of a continuation, whether that’s in the form of another Visions episode or even a live-action adaptation, be that a television series or a major motion picture film trilogy (or, at the very least, a trilogy of Visions episodes).Movie trilogies form a huge part of Star Wars‘ identity. The franchise currently has three to its name — the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, and the sequel trilogy. Of course, this is thinking too far ahead, but it could be time for Lucasfilm to start thinking outside the box and utilizing underused characters and stories from outside the established lore and canon. On Reddit, fans continue to discuss “Lop and Ochō,” with many questioning why it has yet to receive a follow up.“Disney has been sitting on ‘Lop and Ochō’ for five years now and has done nothing with it,” one user writes, adding, “there’s enough story in this 20 min short for a full trilogy of films.”“The things I would do for more ‘Lop & Ochō’ truly cannot be put into words!” another adds. “Volume 1 had some GREAT shorts, but L&O was easily my favorite!”Credit: LucasfilmOne fan calls for Star Wars: Visions Presents, which launches this year on Disney+ starting with a full dedicated series based around “The Ninth Jedi,” to continue the story.“Yes. I’d like to see how the story of ‘Lop and Ochō’ wraps up, whether we get a happy or sad ending for them,” they write. “Well, considering that Star Wars: Visions Presents is now a thing, it could be that we finally get a continuation at some point after ‘The Ninth Jedi’ series is done.”They continue: “And it helps that as I’ve noticed recently, ‘Lop and Ochō’ is picking up slightly more popularity on this subreddit (although the daily contributors are sadly quite small). Still, we should be hopeful something is done about it. If stories like ‘The Ninth Jedi,’ ‘The Duel,’ and ‘The Village Bride’ can get continuation, why not ‘Lop and Ochō’? Who’s to say a sequel can’t be made?”With all that said, it’s worth noting that Lop and TD-4 are not iconic or even widely recognized Star Wars characters — at least not yet. Still, it doesn’t change the fact that they have the potential to become iconic. All they need is the right amount of screentime and attention. This applies more so to Lop. After all, she’s a compelling Force user with an instantly memorable appearance that includes samurai-inspired attire, a green lightsaber with engravings, single-lens visor, umbrella glider, and her hovering droid companion. We’ll just have to wait and see. As for Din Djarin and Grogu, it seems like it’s time for a new duo to replace them, and we can’t think of anyone more promising than Lop and her droid.Star Wars: Visions volumes 1-3 are streaming on Disney+.Would you like to see more from Lop?
