Spendthrift’s Goodall Takes the Spa’s Jersey Girl

Wait 5 sec.

Goodall (f, 3, Yaupon–Moon Over Mag Bay, by Malibu Moon) cut back after what seemed like a head scratcher to earn black-type in Thursday's Jersey Girl Stakes at the Spa.Breaking quickly from post 3, she settled just off 5-2 chance Carmel Coast, who carved out an opening quarter mile in :21.92. Joined by Mythical to her outside as the fillies ran past the quarter pole, Goodall began to inch closer to the pacesetter through the stretch, caught her nearing the sixteenth pole and drew off to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Carmel Coast lasted for second while Mythical earned the show spot.Winning rider Flavien Prat also took Thursday's opener with Luminous Beauty (Flameaway).“Honestly, I would just draw a line through her race at Churchill Downs [fifth on May 1],” said Prat of her latest start in the GIII Eight Belles. “I thought it was just too poor to be true. She broke well today and obviously if someone was faster than me, I was okay to sit, so that's what we did. She was acting super today and she showed herself.”Runner up behind Just Bluffing (Mitole) in her career bow going six furlongs at Fair Grounds in January, the bay returned to wire a field of maidens there on Feb. 14 before making it two straight in Oaklawn's Purple Mountain Stakes on Mar. 14.“We felt like she was a really talented filly right along,” said Spendthrift's Ned Toffey. “Her first couple starts were OK. She really stepped up in a stake two starts back, and we were all scratching our heads on Derby weekend. She sort of threw in a clunker. We were hoping that she was ready to bounce back, and all indications were that she was, and she sure did it.”Asked whether the GIII Victory Ride on July 10 might be next for the filly, Toffey said, “It could be a possibility, but we'll, for the most part, defer to Steve [Asmussen, trainer] on that. He does a pretty good job picking the spots, but we'll talk to him and see what he recommends, then go from there.”Mark Toothaker, who co-bred Goodall with William and Corrine Heiligdrodt, purchased Moon Over Mag Bay who was in foal to The Factor for $20,000 at the Keeneland November sale in 2021. The Malibu Moon mare is also responsible for an unraced juvenile filly by Yaupon and a 2026 colt by Yaupon.Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV. JERSEY GIRL S., $175,000, Saratoga, 6-4, 3yo, f, 6f, 1:08.78, ft.1–GOODALL, 124, f, 3, by Yaupon1st Dam: Moon Over Mag Bay, by Malibu Moon2nd Dam: Believe in Charlie, by Indian Charlie3rd Dam: Zehoorr, by Storm Cat($62,000 Ylg '24 FTKJUL; $525,000 2yo '25 OBSAPR).O-Spendthrift Farm LLC; B-Mark Allen Toothaker, WilliamHeiligbrodt & Corrine Heiligbrodt (KY); T-Steven M.
