Kerala HC closes contempt plea against Kerala University V-C - The HinduPublished - June 03, 2026 06:58 pm IST - KOCHIThe Kerala High Court has closed a contempt plea filed by the Registrar of Kerala University against the university’s Vice-Chancellor (V-C), following a request by the former.The High Court had earlier this year sought the personal appearance of Vice-Chancellor  Mohanan Kunnummal after he allegedly failed to implement the university Syndicate’s decision to reinstate K.S. Anilkumar as Registrar. The directive had subsequently been deferred.A Bench of Justice Viju Abraham closed the contempt plea on June 2 , Tuesday, after Mr. Anilkumar submitted that no further orders were required in the case.The court had earlier held that his appearance would be dispensed with, if the court’s directives were complied with. It held that the decision taken by the Syndicate to revoke the suspension and reinstate the Registrar would necessarily be binding on the Vice-Chancellor and that he would have to give effect to it, subject to the powers of the Chancellor. Mr. Kunnummal had then submitted that the matter had been placed before the Chancellor and that a decision was awaited.The Registrar was suspended on July 2, 2025, following a row over displaying a portrait of Bharat Matha at an event in the university’s Senate Hall. The Registrar subsequently approached the court, seeking an order to quash his suspension and also a directive to the V-C not to prevent him from discharging his duties.Published - June 03, 2026 06:58 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
