Rico Verhoeven has been rewarded with two shiny new world rankings after his spirited display against Oleksandr Usyk last month. The kickboxing legend was given little to no chance of beating Usyk, yet he was able to ask serious questions of the pound-for-pound star before he was controversially stopped in the eleventh stanza. Verhoeven has been ranked by both the WBA and WBCHeading into the penultimate round, Verhoeven was ahead by a round on one scorecard and level on the other two.And while his professional boxing record now reads 1-1, the WBA and WBC believe his performance merits a top-15 ranking with both. The WBA has sneaked the Dutchman in at No.15 in its latest ratings, while the WBC, which placed its version of the heavyweight world title on the line in Egypt, has ranked Verhoeven at No.8.Both the WBA and IBF decided Verhoeven wouldn’t be eligible to win their belts even if he upset Usyk.Instead, the IBF and WBA declared their belts would be made vacant in the event of a loss. The IBF hasn’t updated its rankings since May 8.Meanwhile, the WBO, which currently recognises Daniel Dubois as its world champion, has left Verhoeven out of its ratings.WBO president Gustavo Oliveri previously told talkSPORT.com that he wouldn’t have sanctioned Usyk vs Verhoeven if the Ukrainian still held the burgundy and gold strap. It is, therefore, no surprise that Verhoeven doesn’t feature on the WBO update for May.The WBC had, on the other hand, previously made it clear that Verhoeven would be ranked.Usyk stopped Verhoeven in the eleventh round last month in EgyptMatchroom BoxingDiscussing the situation last month, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said: “I believe the right thing would be Rico is going to get ranked for sure by the WBC.“And he deserves to fight again for the world title.“It’s a matter of the ratings committee, but I would say top, top, top.“We took a lot of criticism, and now we will not hear anything said. The result was it.”The WBC has since ordered Usyk to defend his world title against interim champion and mandatory challenger Agit Kabayel.Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh is hoping to make a rematch between Usyk and Verhoeven thereafter.Watch Boxing on DAZN*If you click a link in this boxout, we will earn affiliate revenueSign up to DAZN to access the definitive subscription for boxing fans.Upgrade to DAZN Ultimate from just £24.99/month, guaranteeing access to 185+ fights annually, a minimum of 12 pay-per-views at no extra cost, as well as every Lega Serie A match and other elite football access.Alternatively, DAZN Standard is just £15.99/month, with the caveat you will have to pay for pay-per-view events.Click here to sign up.
