A company in the US has recently introduced a rugged 800-volt (V) battery with a 113-kilowatt-hour (kWh) capacity, that can charge from 10 to 80 percent in less than 42 minutes. The battery, known as Aventor, was designed by American Battery Solutions (ABS), a Michigan-headquartered firm that specializes in lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for commercial and industrial vehicles. ABS unveiled the battery at the unit on October 13, at The Battery Show North America in Detroit.Made for electric trucks, industrial machinery, and other heavy-duty equipment, the battery delivers up to 358 kilowatts (kW) (about 480 hp) of peak power. It can also charge up to 80 percent in 42 minutes or less.Subhash Dhar, ABS founder and CEO, discussed the battery’s potential. “Aventor represents years of work across ABS and an exciting step forward in what we can offer our heavy-duty OEM customers,” Dhar elaborated. Two different versionsThe Aventor battery operates at 800 volts (V). It can store up to 300 watt-hours of energy per liter (Wh/L) and 200 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg). ABS developed two versions to meet the different needs of commercial and industrial vehicles. The first, called the Chassis-Integrated Pack, is designed to fit between a vehicle’s frame rails or in other limited spaces, like roof-mounted installations. The second version, on the other hand, or the Hyper-Rugged Cube Pack, features a reinforced enclosure that can withstand higher levels of vibration, shock, and heavy use.An Aventor chassis-integrated battery pack.Credit: American Battery SolutionsAccording to ABS, the latter can also be installed in different positions. This gives vehicle manufacturers more flexibility when designing EVs. Both versions rely on the same basic technology. This means that producers can use them in different vehicles and equipment. What’s more, the pack also features a wireless battery management system that monitors voltage and temperature at individual cell groups. It includes onboard data storage, cybersecurity protection, and over-the-air software updates.“Safety, reliability and intelligence are central to the design,” said Jeffrey Donaldson, ABS’s SVP of engineering. Additional safety features include gas detection, electrical isolation monitoring, as well as technology designed to prevent battery failures from spreading between cells.A decade of battery lifeThe battery lasts up to 10 years, even under heavy-duty use and harsh conditions. It has IP67 and IP69K protection rating, meaning that it is sealed against dust and can withstand temporary immersion in water and high-pressure water jets.Simultaneously, its fast charging capability could cut downtime for both vehicles and equipment that operate for extended periods. “The result is a highly capable platform that gives customers more energy, more uptime, more value and an excellent foundation from which they can scale electrification across their portfolios,” Dhar stated. An Aventor hyper-rugged cube battery pack.Credit: American Battery SolutionsThe company intends to deliver the first customer samples in 2027. Commercial production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2028. The initial production capacity is set to reach 6,000 battery packs annually, equivalent to approximately 0.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh).“We set out to develop a battery platform that leads on energy density without any compromises in the safety, durability or performance these applications demand,” Dhar concluded in a press release.
