My wife had a couple hundred places saved from TikTok and Instagram on a trip to London, and no way to know when she was near one. Somewhere around Big Ben she said she wished something would just tell her. That stuck with me, so I started building it. Juxtah (iOS): you share a TikTok or Instagram post to it, it pulls the places out (Gemini reads the caption and also watches the video for spoken and on-screen place names, then Google Places confirms them), and it sends a notification when you’re near one you saved. The hard part wasn’t extraction, it was the alerts. My first version sent 35 notifications at once when I drove through a dense area. Geofencing on iOS has hard limits, and one bad buzz makes people turn it off for good. I had to do a lot of testing and tweak the experience but as of my last trip with my wife (we went to iceland), we were notified in a timely and consistent manner that wasn't overwhelming. Stack: Flutter, Node.js, Gemini, Google Places, RevenueCat. It’s live on the App Store and free to start (5 link extractions a month; proximity alerts aren’t capped): https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6745111540?pt=127720044&mt=8&ct=reddit-sideproject What I’d most like feedback on: is “alerts when you’re near” something you’d actually keep switched on, or does it feel invasive? And what would make you save a place in the first place? or anything else you'd like to see on an app like this. submitted by /u/engadgetnerd [link] [comments]
