Scott McTominay has been told not to consider a switch to Real Madrid as contract talks begin. The Scotsman’s deal at Napoli expires in the summer of 2028 and the Italian giants want to keep him at the club.McTominay has been a revelation for NapoliGettyThe 29-year-old joined from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 for around £25million.It has proven to be one of the great piece of business for Napoli as he fast became a club hero.He led them to the Serie A title in his first season, but now he has a decision to make.Reports in Italy suggest that Real Madrid are contemplating a move for the attacking midfielder. But Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna has revealed that talks for McTominay to stay are ongoing. He said: “Scott has a two-year contract left, he wants to stay and we also want him to stay as long as possible.“Then there’s also the financial aspect to reconcile.“We’re working on it, and we’ll continue to do so.“We hope to find a solution that makes both us and the player happy. He’s an important player for us, probably the most important player we have, given what he’s achieved over the last two years.”McTominay has regularly spoken about how good the lifestyle in Italy isGettyMcTominay and Real MadridEuropean football expert Andy Brassell believes a transfer to Madrid wouldn’t be the right move for the Scotsman.Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT.com, he said: “If he decided he’s never going to play for Napoli again, without going on strike. If for whatever reason, he never played again, he would still be remembered as an absolute hero.“That is mainly because of the title win in the 2024/25 season in which he was hugely influential – Serie A MVP.“Napoli have been great for him, and he’s been great for them.“But with where they are, there is a reason for him to think about it because the legacy is safe.“We know that Aurelio De Laurentiis is a bit frugal. If you are McTominay, you know you’ve won the league and are not massively close to doing it again.“They might not even be regulars in the top four because of Como, Roma and Juventus.“He is someone who wants to lead, challenge himself and take himself up a level all of the time, but whether he’d fit Real Madrid is a different question because his best moments are when he’s off the leash and does whatever.“How can you do that with Jude Bellingham in the team? Are we talking about him as a backup or in a deeper role, which didn’t always suit him.“You don’t get the best out of McTominay if he isn’t in an advanced position, so if he is going to go, it has to be for a proper project where he can make the most of his qualities.“The idea of him going somewhere and playing as a six and everyone questioning him would be a real shame .“So, in summary, don’t stay in Napoli for the sake of it. If there is a better offer, consider it, but I am not sure Real Madrid is that.”Mourinho would love to make McTominay part of his teamGettyMcTominay’s Napoli legacyMcTominay hasn’t even made 100 appearances yet for Napoli, but he is already a club legend. The midfielder immediately slotted into the team playing 34 league games. He scored 12 goals, including the opener on the last day of the season against Cagliari. That goal helped them go onto secure the Scudetto, prompting hundreds of thousands of people to flood the streets of Naples and basically worship McTominay. He scored 12 goals in Serie A and claimed Player of the Season. And last season, he scored four times in the Champions League and another ten in the Serie A as they narrowly missed out on the title again. He is adored in Naples and has regularly spoken about how good the lifestyle is, but this season is looking like much more of a struggle.Napoli are sitting in midtable and McTominay has been missing due to heart surgery.
