Following the tragic fatal ejection from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, theme parks in North America and around the world are indefinitely closing thrill rides with similar safety restraints as the investigation into the incident continues. Another Six Flags Entertainment Corporation-owned park, Kings Island, closed two attractions: Diamondback and Orion. Ticketed guests will not be able to ride either attraction for the foreseeable future.Fatal Ejection at Six Flags Over GeorgiaCredit: Six Flags Over GeorgiaOn October 12, a 42-year-old man named Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem died after being “ejected” from his seat on the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia. Police, witness accounts, and on-ride photos confirm that the man struck other riders and the roller coaster infrastructure multiple times before falling near a haunted house building used for the annual Fright Fest Halloween event.Passengers, some of whom reported having blood on their clothing, screamed when the train pulled back into the station, prompting operators to emergency stop the second train before it completed its ride. Those on board the second train were evacuated from the roller coaster.Goliath was manufactured by the Swiss company Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M), and featured a clamshell-style lap bar with no secondary seatbelt or backup restraint. An investigation into the cause of Kariem’s death is ongoing.Credit: Six Flags Over GeorgiaKariem was an Atlanta-based IT manager, robotics coach, and educator beloved by his students and his daughter. He was visiting Six Flags Over Georgia with his family.“This is Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem with a student who dressed as him for ‘dress as your favorite teacher’ day.Instead of sharing the horrible six flags photo, I implore you to share this.He was a father, son, teacher, he made an impact on his community. Let’s please focus on his life rather than his tragic passing. He was so much more than his final moments.Sending love to every person whose life was touched by this poor man.”Kings Island Announces Two Indefinite Ride ClosuresCiting an abundance of caution, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation closed nine roller coasters featuring clamshell-style lap bars manufactured by B&M at six of its theme parks, including Diamondback and Orion at Kings Island. Unlike Goliath, these two roller coasters also feature seatbelts in addition to the main safety restraint.Credit: Jeremy Thompson, FlickrIn response to a Reddit thread posted by u/nick_the_fox, theme park fans shared their thoughts on the future of Diamondback and Orion at Kings Island following the fatal incident at Six Flags Over Georgia.Orion and Diamondback closed indefinitely officially confirmed.Orion and Diamondback closed indefinitely officially confirmed. byu/nick_the_fox inKingsIslandMany fans of the Ohio theme park speculated that Diamondback and Orion would remain closed for the rest of the Halloween Haunts season and the final “Bonus Weekend,” which ends on November 8.“They’re done for the year,” u/Next_Airline26 commented. “Expect to see the trains coming off in the next week for an early start on maintenance.”“Better to play it safe than sorry,” u/SwiftyMusicGods replied.Credit: Larry Syverson, FlickrStill others argued that, since both roller coasters have additional seat belts, Kings Island may be among the first to reopen its thrill rides following the tragic incident on Goliath.“I hope since the KI ones have seat belts unlike the SF ones this will just be an inspection and not a down for the season to overhaul the trains to add seatbelts etc.,” said u/Omegatron387.Credit: Kings Island“I don’t think they will be down the rest of the season since Diamondback and Orion both already have Seatbelts they are more likely to be the first coasters to open,” u/TheGine2010 agreed. “I think this weekend they will be closed next weekend is a toss up and the last weekend of haunt they will most likely be open. The only thing is if the investigation determines shoulder restraints are required it will be a while before B&M Hypers will be open as that will require extensive modification and possibly complete redesigning of the trains.”Kings Island has not said when it expects Orion or Diamondback to reopen.Should Six Flags Over Georgia permanently close Goliath following the tragic fatal ejection?
