Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler is one potential option for Manchester United should Michael Carrick be sacked, talkSPORT understands. It is understood that Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte also have admirers among Old Trafford bosses.Hurzeler could become the first German to manage the Red Devils on a permanent basisGettyWhy is Michael Carrick under pressure at Manchester United?Carrick finds himself under pressure following a 2-0 loss against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, a result that prompted Lisandro Martinez to criticise technical director Jason Wilcox for a lack of squad strengthening. The result extended United’s winless run to a fifth match across all competitions, which included a 1-1 draw against Spurs that condemned the Red Devils to their worst start to a Premier League campaign in 40 years.Carrick will be desperate to avoid letting that figure rise to six when United return to Premier League action on Sunday with a trip to historic rivals Leeds.Worryingly, talkSPORT’s chief live football anchor Adrian Durham predicts Leeds ‘could do a number’ on the Red Devils, which could expedite Carrick’s axing. What has been said on Michael Carrick’s future?“Does it feel like an inevitability? Absolutely, that Michael Carrick will go,” Durham said on talkSPORT Breakfast.“It feels like it’s something that he can’t stop unless they turn around those results.“Elland Road will be fierce on Sunday, Leeds hate Manchester United.“They would love nothing more at Elland Road to put that dagger in.“I think that Leeds could do a number on Manchester United.”Earlier in the show, Durham had remarked: “You’ve got to look at the players, absolutely. No team picked up more league points than Carrick in his 17 games last term, but he has overseen just one win this seasonGetty“And you have to ask the question, is Michael Carrick going to be good enough to manage Manchester United?“Let’s analyse that, because he made some changes yesterday, tactically, that absolutely baffled and floored me and they proved to be their undoing.”Who could take over Carrick should he be sacked?Of the three names on United’s shortlist, Nagelsmann and Conte are both available to start straight away.Conte departed Napoli via mutual consent in May, while Nagelsmann resigned from his post as Germany boss after they were eliminated by Paraguay in the round of 32 at the World Cup.It is understood United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is pushing Nagelsmann’s case internally should Carrick depart. As for Hurzeler, he is tied down to Brighton until 2029 having signed an extension in May.Nagelsmann has been out of club football since he was sacked by Bayern in March 2023GettyThe German, who is understood to be favoured by Wilcox, has the Seagulls sitting third in the Premier League this term thanks to four wins from their opening six fixtures.Hurzeler also masterminded a Brighton comeback to dump United out in the third round of the EFL Cup in September.
